Parade is near perfect but it's also a mood. High Fasion would have joined Kiss, Mountains, and Girls and Boys as classic hits.

But it might have changed how we heard Mountains, etc. and some of what came after. I still think it's got the potential to be one of the bigger Vault tracks depending on how the release it.

“High Fashion”,with its lyrics about a “stuck up little rich girl”,seems like it was tailor-made for UTCM.A few of the other tracks also would have worked well on Parade and in the movie.

The Family performing this at Mary's night time birthday party, while Christopher is working the crowed or flirting with Mary would have been perfect.

Back when the movie was being planned,I remember I heard that The Family and Mazarati were supposed to appear in it.I also heard that Sheila E,The Family and Mazarati were gonna do a big tour called 'The Paisley Park Revue'.But then St.Paul abruptly quit The Family and none of those plans materialized.

That would have been amazing! What a period 85-86 was. I wish he would have continued with style and sounds of this period for a few extra years.

I always wondered why Prince didn't just choose someone else to be the lead singer in The Family, or just continue with the rest of the group without Saint Paul? Susannah could have taken the lead easily. In the story she tells, she says she could sing, so why not continue the group with her in lead instead of disbanding it? She would have been fine as the lead singer. It's surprising he lost all interest in the group after Saint Paul left. I guess Saint Paul was the muse for the group? It reminds me of him trying to start his girl group with The Hookers, but didn't really seem to have the excitement and urgency to get it off the ground until he met Vanity, who I think finally excited him and gave him the push he needed to do it. Seems he really had a lot of faith in Saint Paul.

I agree, I think Prince should have made The Family perform in UTCM. I don't like the actress who played Mary though. It should have been someone in the Prince camp.

My guess is that Prince just didn't have enough time.He was getting ready to shoot UTCM and there just wasn't enough time to find a replacement for Paul. And you're probably right: Paul may have been the muse for the group. When Prince put them together,he told them "let's go after that Duran Duran money".He clearly wanted a charismatic male lead singer.

It was a great idea and a wonderful way to showcase his artists. It seems that,at that point,Prince was having a little trouble keeping his empire together. Some of the proteges were getting restless.

I don't really care for Parade, barring a few great songs. (Yeah, I know, it's the hipster album of choice among the Prince hardcore, but I just don't really like it.)

So yes, I would have welcomed some other good songs of that period onto it. I think it needed less funk (which isn't my thing) and more soul (which is). The "Funk with orchestrations" sound somehow doesn't really do it for me, and I think there aren't quite enough strong songs on Parade.

I do wonder if in 1984-85 (post Purple Rain, that is), Prince kind of stretched himself too thin with the protégé projects. I know he was bursting at the seams with material then, and I'm glad most of it got released, but ideally I'd like him to have kept a little more of the first-rate stuff he gave away ('Nothing Compare 2 U', 'The Glamorous Life', etc.) for his own records.

That song, along with Feline are so different from the other Family songs though. They never felt, to me, like they belonged to the project. Not least because the songs are just so much weaker than the released stuff. More for Sheila E or something.

I think we need to see the Family album released with HIS vocals. The album's music is stellar but it's a PERFECT example of how Paul's weak vocals screw up a fantastic album.

High Fashion - 8/10 ..include his bass line. The song is on a diff level with that bass line.

Mutiny - 7/10 - his vocals.

Desire - 9/10...keep the faster beat, not the slow one on the album.

NC2U - 8/10

Yes/Susanah's - funky as hell 8/10

River Run Dry - sh**

Screams of Passion - 7/10

All these songs get are dropped by 2 points as they are with Paul's vocals.

THis is a GREAT album.

I think because Parade might be a more 'proper' movie soundtrack than Purple Rain, is why it vibes they way you feel. Especially coming from Prince. So the "strong' songs like on Purple Rain aren't on Parade.

If Prince had more band performances the album might have had much more or been very different.

I really think it isn't the he stretched himself to thin, but that he tried to counterperform Purple Rain.

Paul may not be as an experienced singer as Prince, but his vocals are not "weak" IMO.

He has a much richer and deeper TONE than Prince actually and I think his vocals make the album for waht it is.

.

.

Prince doing Mutiny or High Fashion live, his vocals are really nothing special, they are all attitude, which is fine, but it doesn't necessarily rate as "strong" vocals IMO.

Prince knew exactly where he was going in late 1984 with the songs he gave to The Family. What I think he didn't realize was how damn good those songs were and how they could have fit into UTCM. Then I think he realized ater he gave the songs and the movie was forming in his mind and then into production, he wanted the songs back, hence the somewhat sabotage of taking Jerome, Eric, and Susanah with him to France, causing The Family to disband.

Prince even said in a interview IIRC that he didn't have enough good material. Well, he actually did, he just gave it away. Prince wanted to capture the magic Morris and Jerome had on screen, and honestly had Morris and Prince didn't fallout at the time, Morris would have been a great Tricky and then Prince and Morris could have incorporated Gigolos Get Lonely Too (Oh how I wish that song could have been in the movie).

Well that's my rant.

I was just watching the Girls & Boys video... That would have been the perfect scene insertion in the UTCM movie.

High Fashion and A Love Bizarre(Prince and combined Sheila E/Revolution band) and that is how Christopher has entrance to this ritzy high society birthday bash. Not just walking in unannounced lol Mary Sharon notices this avant garde artist performing and wants to check out his haunts in Uptown Nice.

Ok,let's assume that the Family was in UTCM,singing "High Fashion" in a nightclub.

What about Mazarati? What song do you think they should be singing in the movie?

Maybe "100 MPH"? I'm thinking "She's Just That Kinda Lady",a song that I think could have been a single.Or how about.....after Mary breaks up with Christopher,he runs back inside, orders a drink and Mazarati are singing "I Guess It's All Over"?

I was thinking how/were would Mazarati fight. I mean they could have just been visual/speaking parts as Christophers band of musicians/artists.

Maybe the choir while Prince and Mark are working on Kiss up in the alcove over the ocean?

Strawberry Lover performed where Christopher and Tricky are talking(the bats) or She's Just that Kind of Lady.

There songs overall are not similar to the Family/Parade/Romance 1600
