For God's sake - release the "PREMIUM" unseen video material.

Comerica/Howe/Estate/et. al figure, okay, we'll release some songs not Purple Rain era, but we better drench them in some Purple Rain iconography for supreme profit maximazation.

I eagerly anticipate "Van Gogh" set to the original choreography rehersals for "Baby I'm a Star".

Ikr. Why are they holding out on us? They’ll probably wait till next year, have those rehearsal footage be the big release for 2020, after teasing us for 2 years

The worst part is, I understand the need for a promo video for marketing video. But it could have been a fun lyrics video, an animated, anything. But now, that would have required a budget, so why bother when you can just poorly edit a cheap VHS rehearsal video...

yeahthat

It's probably because this is composed out of the footage Apple Music is using to create their First Ave 83 documentary. So less of a lazy move and more of a promotional move for what's next.

Some awesome new footage! Looks like some choreography for When Doves Cry video

Yes, definitely some of the When Dove’s Cry video practice. Such great footage, but so ridiculous to use it for Manic Monday. Just does not work. This type of video footage should be released with the audio. They should put together any footage of the PR period and sell that.

Cobbler together from off-cuts from the NC2U video. Lazy effort from the estate. For all Howe’s crowing on about releasing respectful work this comes across as very disrespectful to P’s legacy.

OMG that Prince Manic Monday rehearsals video lol. You can tell some of the dance moves rehearsal with Brown Mark and Wendy etc are the When Doves Cry video dance practice. The thing is, these quick flash rehearsal videos are exciting because he was such an enigma. They are just as exciting as the public performances. However, I bet Prince would be pissed to have these behind the scenes rehearsals released though. Just like MJ would have been pissed at This Is It.

I get all the criticism and most is valid. Otoh,
It makes sense to link to and follow on from the NC2U vid, because they are part of the same release.
I found the vid exciting and fascinating and wasn’t bothered by the lack of sync. On the contrary: I think it was better that way because it made it explicitly clear that they were dancing to other music. I think we would all be more pissed off if they made it look like this was footage of them rehearsing for this song.
It makes sense to link audio not intended for release, demo quality, with visuals of the same standing.
And yeah, these releases are not focused primarily on the ultra-hardcore fans and I too would like to see a well-curated box set, but it’s still possible to enjoy these for what they are.

I'm not sure about that. Alive, he kept his process private for the most part. But he once said he understood a fan's need. Now while he was talking about the unreleased songs people had, he was a fan of music, too. He has shit like this from other people. At some point, as an artist, you have to resolve that once you're dead everything will be revealed; or at least much more than you planned on. It would almost seem MJ had more behind the scenes stuff released than Prince did while alive.

He was a smart guy. He knew all of it would eventually come out, especially since important chunks were already out via bootlegs. However, he did not dictate in writing what when and how he wanted the material released. I think that was purposeful on his part - as in “let all the fools here figure it out when I’m gone”. He knew it would be a mess.

I wouldn't really consider random rehearsal footage with Manic Monday music on top of it a Manic Monday video. Release a video with somehting actually associated with the song Manic Monday, or, release the rehearsal footage with the rehearsal footage audio.

Throwing songs on top of random rehearsal footage is just bizarre and lazy.

In my opinion this demo should not have been released. Its clearly a simple guide vocal. No way Prince would have released this. That goes for the album as a whole. I get that it's a treat for die hards but I think they are doing the catalog disservice by not releasing his most recent recordings instead.

I think it’s a great look/listen into his “demo” process for both new and old/die-hard fans. New fans and/or younger people will learn the brilliance of his ability to create these songs for both genders.

I agree that they also need to release his newer recordings, but the amount of material is so huge. It will take some time.

These pseudo-crusades for what he would have wanted are irrelevant. We don't know what he wanted. But of course every Prince fan is the biggest and best Prince fan. So clearly, the Org is the place to go to dispel the knowledge by said fan.

It seems, to many fans, the estate can't do one thing right. Everything is a misstep, everything is wrong, shoulda been this, coulda been that. It's just incredibly ungrateful. Prince fans are the worst types of fans - they're unappreciative. They don't get business, or at least seem to suspend any knowledge that this is a business. They don't get that not every fucking album will have some 10-disk expanded edition, everything remastered, in a teak box encrusted with diamonds and pearls and carved by a woodsman in Thailand, numbered and signed. I don't even get the logic of "most recent recordings" being the go-to, when Prince clearly had decades of music sitting in virtual rot that needs to be cared for, curated, and compiled for release.

  • Fans balked at 4Ever. It's a cash grab. "Moonbeam Levels" was from a tape.
  • Paisley Park opened the same year he did - too soon, disrespectful.
  • Purple Rain was flattened dynamically, bad remaster, problem with this or that.
  • Originals - he wouldn't have wanted this.
  • Rave Ultimate - cash grab, it's garbage
  • Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth - pointless
  • All albums on streaming platforms - he hated that
  • Videos on YouTube, etc. - he didn't like YouTube

...and that's the short list of bitching. Yeah well, he didn't like the internet either, apparently, but he was sure to fuck on it.

Fans have asked for certain things, and they've come out. The estate listens, but it's not a vending machine. No one is going to get everything they post because they so passionately think they're correct in asking for it.

It's just constant bitching. Hell, if I ran the estate, I'd pay of the bill, pay for storage, and lock the whole place up for a decade; give 'em something to complain about. A decent amount - not all - of Prince fans need a motherfucking time out. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Otherwise, sit yo ass down and stop pissing on someone else's parade.

At this point be thankful for what you get. My guess is that Prince purposely did all this stuff in LIFE so that when he died people would be going nuts over stuff and what is what and what stinks, the reality is that its the same as when he was alive so nothing has changed. As for the ORIGINALS cd not having notes or artwork, blame MR JAY Z who has the initial right to release it but all he has are digital platforms which lets be real no one in this day and age cares about artwork and liner notes like we did, we are a vanishing breed folks. So no one is going to foot the bill on artwork and notes and interviews for a release that JAY Z was handling, hes not footing the bill for anything, so that is why you got what you got. News for all, if it was a BRAND NEW album on TIDAL youd be getting the same lackluster release and push.

Agreed. Releasing exactly what Prince fan prefers = happy Prince fan. Otherwise, you get a critical and bickering Prince fan. I like it all - even it’s not my favorite time period for his music.

Prince was said to have scoured YT regularly to look for potential musicians. Heck, he even endorsed Chloe Calvin’s (very good) YT review of his Parade album on its 30th Anniversary by re-tweeting it on his account biggrin So, it’s not that he didn’t like it or use it - he just didn't want random people posting his shows or recordings. A bit of a double standard, but ya know, that was sometimes Prince smile

I don't know Trivial. I think there's a middle ground here.

Are there people who come here and do nothing but bitch and moan? Sure.

I purchased this on CD, and I may foolishly double dip for the deluxe edition because I can afford to and I'm happy to support the funnel for future projects. (I bought the Rave triple pack for the same reason).

I'm thrilled for this release and am excited about tracks coming out of the vault. But I also think this is haphazardly done. Why these particular 15 tracks? What about the Mavis Staples tracks? The boat loads of other Time tracks? Graffiti Bridge? There is a ten CD box set of "originals" worthy material that could be cobbled together. But we got these 15. It's fantastic that we got them, but it's also undeniably arbitrary.

So to me, the easiest way to alleviate the confusion is to start at the beginning and release it all. 5.1 mixes of the albums with pertinent outtakes, 12" mixes, soundboard concerts etc..... Not only do I think that's a "reasonable" expectation, I also think it's the only surefire way to please just about everyone.

For the workaholic that was Prince, this is just right on point, showing him and the band working and reworking his chops, until they were fixed for ever on that Syracuse night.

It's a wonder to witness Prince outside of his costumes, wearing your everyday eighties clothes and it shows that magic doesn't come out of nowhere, it has to be summoned over and over.

It's as bad as I feared. Demeaning Prince like this, ridiculing him like this, that's gross and sick.

So putting aside the debate about the recordings because there still remain some doubt, I'll say it again if only because of the video: boycott that fucking album, don't stream it, don't purchase it, download it illegally if you wanna hear it, but let us not encourage them to do more of this nonsense!!

[Edited 6/21/19 10:33am]

I understand the sentiment for sure, but boycotts never have the desired effect intended. If there was a strong boycott, it might lead to change, but likely would lead the stooges in charge to simply think demand is low, and the vault would be closed. When Stevie Wonder and others decided not to perform in Florida as a boycott for the Trayvon Martin shooting, what did that accomplish? Well, concerts bring money to local economies, and create at least a quick temp job for low income workers looking for a quick second income, which would not be there if there is no concert...

But, the vault is in bad hands, and no matter what great strategy I can come up with, there is some negative force against it. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I'm not being negative i'm being critical.

What does the Revolution rehearsing for a tour that ended in Syracuse have to do with a demo that was given to the Bangles? What do the extreme emotions you feel when you see a young, energetic Prince have to do with this pop song he put together over a few days, just like he did a million other songs that year? You have to tie yourself in knots making the narrative fit - "It proves he worked hard" can be used as an excuse for literally anything and everything Prince related.

I want to see this footage uncut, just like you do, and the estate owes me nothing, but that doesn't mean I have to accept uncritically what we're given. They already did this trick with Nothing Compares, and it worked then, and now it's a case of diminishing returns and lack of ideas. How many more times will it be ok to make the same video?

All this over a video perhaps 8 people who are not prince.org members will see.. ..

Yes, a stupid video, only a buffoon or stooge working on this stuff would think this makes sense. And yes, I'd love for that Warehouse rehearsal to come out some day on Blu Ray, but nobody will watch this, it will be forgotten in a few days. Sad, but with Originals likely poor sales number, the plug could be pulled sooner than we think...that's why exhaustive box sets are so important, we need as much material released as quickly as possible, or we may never hear it.
