i know, but they do own the licensing until 2021, right? so it would make sense to have
warners remaster, repack, expand and reissue the albums prince recorded while he was
with them, wouldn't it?

I seriously doubt it, Chris Moon was trying to sell the rights to 'Soft & Wet' which is part that album. I doubt he could do that if WBR owns the licensing of it.

Frankly I don't think Warners will put any effort into producing deluxe editions when their licensing deal will run out in 2021 so I don't think we will see any more deluxe editions before Sony Legacy would start coming up with them.

I'll stand by my response to the initial post. As it's going to contain 'scrapbooks and lyrics', that should at least be stuff in his own hand.

The memoirs would have been for financial gain. I have no idea on advance he may have received, but there clearly would have needed to be paid back if nothing was published, and the estate absolutely needs to make decisions that will enrich it (it still hasn't paid the huge death tax bill afaik).

This seems to me a perfectly reasonable release, and beyond that, not releasing it in a profitable way would be a dereliction of duty by those running the estate.

I get what you are saying as well. Of course the publisher must release the book in order to recoup any advance given to Prince, and also to attempt to make some type of profit for themselves. They will also give major "hype" to the book regardless of how much was written by his own hand. We don't yet know - other than the first 50 pages about his genealogy/birth/childhood - what other handwritten pieces will be included.

*

From the description posted earlier on this thread it seems that the majority of the book will be a Biography from where he had stopped at his childhood up through Purple Rain. I am very curious about the person or people who organized and wrote the remaining pages. I guess still lots of questions to be answered...

[Edited 4/23/19 13:35pm]

From the sounds of it i think this book is going to mainly focus on his geneology

Chris Moon does not own the rights to the master recording. He owns half of the publishing rights. Those are two different things.
(Just checked the song's publishing info in Universal's database: it still lists Prince and C.Moon so it looks like Moon's share wasn't sold after all.)

.

And just to be clear: Warners does not "own" the licensing. The masters (and their licensing rights) are owned by the Estate, and they have licensed the WB-era masters back to Warners for certain time periods (mostly until 2021). Probably that's what you meant too, just wanted to make sure it's clear for others as well.

Their dereliction of duty is NOT releasing any vault music. But you have some good points in there.

It seems that Prince's written contribution to the book before he passed will be focused on his genealogy and some or most of his childhood. The other 3 parts seem to have been put together by another person or group, and will tell the story of his time up through Purple Rain. Very curious to know how many never-before-seen Prince-penned items they actually had for the book.

This cover could've been a wonderful album cover for a good compilation release or (future) box set.

Instead of these horrible (The Hits 1 & 2) cover arts.

Prince for one had a huge amount of taste leaning towards (good) kitch.

His complete package of life, music, imagery, live performances, movies and videos was wonderful, and unique though, as a whole.

Many album covers i never liked. (90's and later). They lack of iconic images and leave less traces then his first 10 album covers, imho of course. wink

.
Both you and IstenSzek were talking about licensing and licensing is a temporary transfer of reproduction/distribution rights of a particular master recording, it has nothing to do with publishing. You brought up Chris Moon trying to sell his rights and doubted he could do that if WMG "owns" the licensing. Again: the two things are totally unrelated.

.
And I didn't claim you meant that "WMG owns the licensing rights", hence adding: "Probably that's what you meant too, just wanted to make sure it's clear for others as well."
But you did bring up Chris Moon which is confusing as his ownership of half of the song's publishing does not have anything to do with someone else's ownership (or licensing) of the master recordings.
.

It is odd and confusing Amazon list it with two different publishers - but I'm sure this will get cleared up nearer the time of release as Amazon's database is always full of issues.

Century : https://www.amazon.co.uk/...780899173/
Spiegel & Grau : https://www.amazon.com/Be...399589651/

I ordered the one listed as Spiegel & Grau as that was merely the first one I saw.

One would think ordering a book wouldn't be complicated.

Could that be the reason why the announcement of this book is so 'late'?

Because of the shutdown of Spiegel & Grau ?

I mean, 55 pages... that doesn't take 3 years to release. Even with a ghostwriter next to it...

Or is this an attempt that creates more time to restore and organise the unreleased music for a propper, bigger release?

Cause honestly, there isn't much happening.

PR deluxe and P&M'83 in three years time...

I saw through the Estate billing that the contract for the book had to be renegotiated. This is one of the reasons it took longer than expected to be released.
