So #45 on Amazon chart would count as what on a billboard chart??? Oh yea that's right it wouldn't... It didn't make the billboard 200 so that indicates it didn't even sell 2 thousand copies.

Who the hell buys DVDs anymore ... if you're gonna bother with a re-released at least stick the concert on blu-ray, ya cheapskates!!

Not me. I recently have taken to checking them out for free from the library. Not sure why I never thought of it before but fuck red box and PPV streams. Your local library has stuff for days.

When I DO buy DVD or blu rays, they're usually music since I know I'll watch them more than a few times. Lot of times though you can get really good deals on those 4 packs in discount bins or a buck a throw at flea markets.

I barely pay for any entertainment anymore beside occasionally live music. There's just SO MUCH STUFF out there so between YouTube and the library I'm set. I do have Netflix because I like stand up comedy and documentaries.

I guess it depends what your groove is ... I love movies and film so my favourites are a must purchase, and in the best format possible (HD blu-ray, though 4k is creeping in).

I suppose the equivalent for music would be buying an album in a lesser sound quality; why would you want to listen to an album with scratchy muddy sound when you can have it crystal clear? And that's what DVDs are now, they look rubbish on HD TVs ... and to my knowledge its quite tricky to purchase a non HD TV these days.

Releasing this set with the concert on DVD is lazy and about ten years behind the times.

I assume this was just an easy deal for the Estate and Arista (label for this album?)... who just wanted to do a rerelease and cash in on their 1 Prince album deal.

.

Probably not part of any Estate rerelease plan... just an easy option to fill a gap and get some cash for doing very little.

.

I have all the parts, as I'm sure most of us do, so won't bother buying again.

"this April 26 will see us reissuing more Prince classics on vinyl, as well as a special 3CD set, along with rare and unreleased b-sides, live tracks and remixes."
.
Really? I don't think so. I guess this press release was just written by a clueless intern at Sony. (What an earth is an "unreleased B-side" anyway? It's either released or it's not a B-side, but an outtake.)

It's almost Top 40 on sales based on pre-sales. The album will be released in one month. It's not even out yet. I think it looks promising.

It's MORE than promising! It'll be ANOTHER top 10 ten entry for Prince(r.i.p.)

So Prince, whom fought 4 his first record deal & got it, fought 4 a movie deal & got it, fought 4 freedom from his WB contract & got it, fought 4 his masters & got them.Gets a curable illness & says 2 himself ok, I'm done. "Life is a Box Of Chocolates"

On the Billboard 200? Honestly, I don't see it doing so well. I actually like the Rave album and even though I don't plan on buying this set, I do genuinely hope it does well. But I just don't see it happening.

Who gives a shit how much it sells? What personal validation does anyone derive from that? Does it make the album any better or any worse? Does it solidify Prince's stature?

I swear to god I always found it weird for fans to cite sales as a measure of..well...anything really.

A lot of my favorite records and artists - including Prince - never made a dent on Billboard and a lot of those charts are manufactured and phony anyway. A lot of movies I dig no one's ever heard of and did shit box office. If you like the record, buy it. What satisfaction is derived from looking up where it lands? The strange validation that other people like what you like? That you're not wrong or alone in liking or buying something? "Yay team/GO PRINCE"?

So weird to me.

It's to do with the fact that if a company consistently puts out products that don't sell then they will eventually stop putting out those products.

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you on that but this case is different. Simply because future Prince releases are dependent on these albums being successful. If nobody buys these re-releases, Sony/Warner Bros/the Prince Estate will begin to wonder if funding more releases is worth it.

Maybe that's a good thing because they could then licence the re-releases to the likes of Funkttowngrooves or Cherry Red who are able to re-release obscure albums that will only sell a few hundred copies worldwide and still give them decent packaging with bonus tracks like the single edits etc included.

Clearly if Sony/Warner/Prince Estate can't make a profit on these releases that are guaranteed sell a few thousand, if not a few ten thousand, worldwide then they have serious issues with how they're doing it.

Given that the first posthumous release was a collection of live demos and the second release is a re-release of one of his most unpopular albums, I think it's very clear that they do have serious issues with how they're doing it.

The first posthumous release was 4ever, then Purple Rain Deluxe, then NC2U, then Piano & a Microphone, then the most recent releases.

4ever was only (yet another) greatest hits compilation. That doesn't count. And I deliberately didn't mention Purple Rain Deluxe because that was supposedly in the works before Prince died so it doesn't count either. Nothing Compares 2 U was just a single song, so again, I omitted that.

But even if you include all 3 of those, it doesn't change the fact that since he died, there hasn't been anything of note released. Which means my point still stands in relation to the weak output since his death.

Well if the estate keeps dragging its feet and putting out rehashes, I can ususally find a ton of stuff online since he passed. I'd gladly pay for it but am not able to.

Smart thing for them to do once they get the rights stuff sorted out, is set up a highly publicized website ala carte download/stream service and then do pjhysical copies of the stuff that generates the most interest. Give folks a trial run or something and advertise it heavily.

Yeah, I'll hold my breath. Can't wait for Planet Earth and NEWS deluxe edition coming soon.

the only actual 'new' stuff that was released, was the "Deliverance EP" which was sort of a bootleg
at the end of the day.

but i'm glad we got that one, at least.
