I wonder if Prince was really like that (no direct eye contact, etc) or it was all just an act?

Matt Damon easily passed on going to a private party with P one night back in the 90s, he showed no interest at all. He wasn't a fan.

If I encountered someone famous who I wasn't 'following' or a 'fan' of I don't think I would say much either

The best story I remember is the one about Sheena Easton, when she and Prince went out on the town and he wouldn't talk to her, he just looked at her, he said he just wanted to communicate with their minds.

What Matt Damon said was totally normal and appropriate and what Prince said in response was totally pretentious. It shows that Matt Damon has normal social skills and was trying to engage Prince in polite conversation, and that Prince returned the favor by saying something that was hard to respond to in a polite, appropriate and comfortable way. It demonstrates that Prince was either deliberately trying to avoid a conversation, which is an impolite thing to do at best, or a snub at worst. Or it demonstrates that Prince doesn't have the appropriate social skills to engage in introductory small talk. What do you think Matt Damon should have said as an ice breaker? Something like 'I think you're really awesome!', maybe?

.

nod That would probably be a good starter with Prince.

We don't know what tone Matt Damon used. Perhaps he said it in a way that conveyed some sort of negative connotation or derision about Prince's beloved hometown. Remember when Dick Clark famously asked him, in his first nationally televised interview, after his performance on American Bandstand, "Where do you learn to do this in Minneapolis?" Some say it was that question that set the tone for that infamous interview. Quincy Jones laughingly tells the story of MJ and Prince meeting for MJ to try (unsuccessfully) to convince P to collaborate on "Bad." MJ reportedly said, "I don't even know where Minnenapolis is, mispronouncing the name. P reportedly said, "It's Minneapolis!!" LOL. Bottom line: Prince LOVED Minneapolis...and NOBODY better not say nothing bad about his Minneapolis!!

It was an inane comment. It's like saying to Michael Jackson, "I hear your album is called Thriller, right?' Talk about stating the obvious. Matt"s comment actually comes across as rather patronising and Prince's reaction is understandable in my opinion. Why would Prince engage in small talk faced with this buffoonary.
Baby, you're a star.

or, heaven forbid, a joke!! How many of us has said something completely sarcastic in response to a question that you thought was fairly obvious, or it was just the perfect set up for a particularly funny response? I thought it was hella funny.

Actually think Prince was not interested in talking to dudes. If Matt were a chick he would have been talkative.

That just implies that Prince had a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Minneapolis. Anyway, if there is a jerk in this story it isn't Matt Damon. The fact that the story is so short implies that things became very awkward and that there was no further interaction.

I'm sorry '\"so you're from Minneapolis?" is dumb. If he doesn't know what to say then simply say "Hi, nice to meet you" or something like that.

Prince saying he lives inside his own heart is not a joke. It just goes over most people's heads.
