I get the impression that Morris does just enough to retain a comfortable lifestyle. He lives in a beautiful, sunny area, he still performs, wrote a book without too much effort (IMO), and probably did not want the 'stress' of being in a movie which requires long hours. This is not criticism.

I just re-read that media blurb, which would have been from the mid-late 80’s based on when The Color Purple was released, and it stated he “read” for that film, not that he was offered a role. Two very different things. There were so many big names in that film, so I would imagine he would not have passed on that one. Though, if he was still heavily into Cocaine he may not have been able to handle the set hours for a film of that nature.
* Just looked at the link which shows Dec 1985. So, Morris was only a year off of PR, and in full party mode. [Edited 10/14/19 18:53pm]

I agree Peggy, just enough to get by. Morris seems to be a likeable guy. Glad I read the book.

I wonder if Prince admired those qualties in him. He is likeable to me as well.

EugeneKnight said: As a fan this is a disappointing book which merely confirms Morris Day as a figment of Prince's imagination. There is so little insight, so little of his own story shared from his perspective rather than viewed through the Prince's narrow prism.
After the release of Pandemonium why did the band disintegrate? No idea because he's straight onto talking about Prince competing with Michael Jackson.
Why did The Original 7ven grind to a halt? It isn't addressed because he is fixated on his standing relation to Prince.
The tacky and cheap looking cover exactly mirrors the content. Perhaps Morris figured the only way to get the book released was to ride on Prince's coat tails, but when you're a bit part player in your own autobigraphy you know you done f%$ked up. Very poor. My thoughts exactly, surprised by the positive reviews. He is a very dull, uninteresting personality. A Prince-created cliche acting out a character on and offstage. Like you I wondered why original 7ven album was hardly mentioned, nor the events leading to their breakup.

I agree with you 100%. Glad I "listened" to the book on audible, but I have so many more questions like yours above. He glossed over so may segments that (to me) were important nuggets to the story. I know a lot of his opinions were covered in the O7 DVD that was in the deluxe edition, but I wanted all of that documented in the book.
It is definitely a story that he could have delved deeper into. I would like to know more about Morris outside of music. Does he play golf? Does he take his kids to the fair? Does he go to Disney World with his kids? I would like more of this kind of stuff. Not necessarliy because I care, but to paint him as a person and not as some fictional character from a movie.
I also don't know if it was his editors/co-writer or what that made the final decisions. I do know that David Ritz is really thorough in his writing. His book on Aretha Franklin (Respect...not the autobiography he cowrote with her) and Marvin Gaye are supurb. I know he would be willing to go deeper, but not sure if it was editing that made the book this way. [Edited 10/16/19 12:01pm] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

[Edited 10/16/19 12:01pm] I always thought his intention was to specifically chronicle his time with Prince, and not his life outside of that. The “princely life in funk” part of the title seems to hint to that.

If you'd read the book, you'd see he talked about his life before, during and after Prince, not just his time with Prince.

I really enjoyed this book. If for anything, it shed some light on some things I always wondered about (for example, where the hell that name "Eugene Knight" came from) and some things I didn't expect.

The part about Prince kicking him out of his house was pretty jarring for some reason. The part about Prince sharing and not wanting to share women with him was funny, but still jarring.
I never knew Morris was on drugs. So, that's weird to me. It was interesting to see that Prince was pimping it with the multiple women. I always thought he would but I had never had any indication, from an article or whatever women that slept with him that he was into orgies or whatever.(I never did take Zannalee to heart. No woman had ever confirmed it.)
Interesting book so far. I'm almost half done!

Zannalee was not about an orgy - just a "three-way" between him, his girlfriend and her sister. "She had a sister named "Fendi"....if you know the history it's not too hard to convert the names "Zannalee" and "Fendi"
