Ingrid Chavez album has not aged well...imo

..This album always kinda sucked IMO, and since it has recently been used as super-annoying filler, I revisited it and found it to be total drivel. Even "songs" I remember kinda forcing myself to like when it came out (out of loyalty to Prince) seem embarrassing to me. (Jadestone? Candle Dance? WTF was I thinking in 1991?) Any fans, new or old?

wave I liked it, still do, especially Heaven must be near, but also Hippy Blood, Slappy Dappy & Little Mama.
I still love lots of stuff from back then , like Kool Skool 4 instance lol.
Good times biggrin

I don't think it's gotten any worse with age. It's interesting I guess, speaking as a fan. I can't see myself giving it time if Prince wasn't involved, maybe that's a problem with me though shrug

I like her album.I found it to be a pleasant surprise. The music is intoxicating and hypnotic, and her poetry is very effective and creative. This album was much more interesting than the Carmen Elektra mess that came a few years later smile

but having said that,I think they made a mistake when the released "Elephant Box" as the first single. What the hell is an elephant box?! nuts makes no sense. They should have released the superior "Heaven Must Be Near" as the lead single.

I love it. To me, it sounds like the most modern sounding thing today from that era.

I totally agree. Her album is one u either love or hate. I don't like her speaking voice and found her character in Graffitti Bridge really irritating.

I think it has a very late 80s 90s sound that I appreciate. It isn't overdone.

Dated but in a good way

This.

As a previous poster said - I got it out of love for Prince (same with the Carmen Electra album) but once that "newness" wears off, it's not that good . . . most likely due to her speaking voice. Too cutesy and to me, always seems on the verge of a little girl giggle.

I wonder how some of these sounds would be with straight Prince vocals?

I remember they released it as the second single, but they remixed it and added a Tony M. rap to it smile heard it a few times on the radio back then.

May 19, 1992 is one of the most avant-garde things to have been released on Paisley Park (alongside 16), and it's a mix of experimental grooves and spoken word poetry: no wonder it's not to everyone's taste, it's a very niche product. Though it's not unthinkable it may have charted a little, given the great music videos, and at a time when Madonna's Justify My Love and the relatively similar Enigma project were hits, but it would have taken a lot of promo effort from WB's part.

Ingrid's words may be a little naive sometimes, hell she was young, but Prince went way beyond his safety zone on that one (virtually nothing else he did sounds like that) and Michael Koppleman's additional work is just as gorgeous. Take my word for it even if you don't understand it: it's a great record!

You may wanna try her 2010 album, or her current project Black Eskimo, maybe you'd like those a little better?

It not terribly bad, but I dont pull it out to listen to it either.

I guess maybe that type of music doesnt speak to me. It is cool for one or two songs but not a whole album.

Download all the shit hop that you can for your kids, neices, nephews, and their friends also. That will prevent them from going out and buying it and will prevent some shit hop sales. Every little bit helps - Andy

It was of its time, and is kind of timeless in a way. I think it is interesting, and every now and then I will jam those tunes. The allure for me are the atmospherics and the vibe that they projected. It's always interesting to note that Prince made his musical contributions to that project spontaneously upon his initial listening to the lyrics.
