The pope said he supports civil unions for same-sex couples.

Hasn't he been inching this way from the start of his era?
I'm not Catholic, so I don't know how this issue ebbs or flows with Catholic dogma.
I never had a problem with civil unions for same sex couples. or hetero

American Catholics will approve.

In a surprising announcement, Pope Francis told a documentary filmmaker that same-sex couples should “legally covered” by civil union laws. The Pope’s response suggests a softening of the Vatican’s views of the issue, which for centuries has contended that homosexuality constitutes sinful behavior and that gay marriages would not be allowed in the Catholic church or recognized by the church as a familial relationship.

However, Pope Francis’s new messaging on this issue of same-sex relations may be coming as a result of a seismic shift in the way that many Catholics, especially Catholics in the United States, view homosexuality and the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. In fact, U.S. polling data offers little to suggest that the Church would face significant backlash by changing its stance on what was once a centerpiece of the culture wars.

Vatican says Pope's comments on same-sex civil unions were taken out of context

By Delia Gallagher, CNN 3 hrs ago

.

The Vatican has sought to clarify Pope Francis' comments in support of same-sex civil unions, saying they were taken out of context and do not signal a change in doctrine

In a letter sent on October 30 from the Vatican's Secretariat of State to papal representatives (nuncios) around the world, the Vatican said that two comments made by Pope Francis in the film "Francesco" by Russian-born director Evgeny Afineevsky were taken out of context.

The Vatican's letter was first published on the Facebook page of the Vatican nuncio to Mexico, Archbishop Franco Coppola, on Sunday.

A senior Vatican official has confirmed the letter's authenticity to CNN.

"More than a year ago, during an interview, Pope Francis answered two different questions at two different times that, in the aforementioned documentary, were edited and published as a single answer without the proper contextualization, which has led to confusion," the letter says...

.

It should actually be easier for a Catholic (or any Christian in a Sacramental Church), to accept Civil Unions or legal marriages. There is a difference between the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and Marriage under the laws of the State.

.

This was reflected in the marriage equality votes in Australia - Of those who supported the Yes vote when split by religions and denominations, Catholics were more in favour of this than every other identified religious group.

.

This position is broadly consistent with the first comment by the Pope: "What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered," the Pope said. I say broadly because I see no reason for a distinction between marriage under the laws of the State and civil union under the laws of the State.

.

Unpacking the first statement from the second does not really change the first.
