the CHOPS: Portland Seattle and Minneapolis...

What's happening in these two are is absolutely outrageous.
Minneapolis is feeling the aftershocks of of what is still happening in Portland and Seatle. And it's not good.
If I recall correctly Seattle is on it's 100+ days of rioting(it is not 'protesting' at all).
Mayors and City Councils are permitting this, not allowing police to
What is the purpose. What is the aim. What is the hoped outcome.

Seattle as the next Detroit? That's not how we roll
Oct. 9, 2020 at 8:01 am Updated Oct. 9, 2020 at 9:42 am

By Jon Talton

Special to The Seattle Times
.

Two weeks ago I wrote about the extinction-level event facing Seattle small businesses, not just because of the pandemic but because of City Hall's tolerance of crime. It produced the largest response of any column I've ever written, 99.9% in agreement.

It was a nerve that needed to be touched. But I was surprised by the number of readers who took the leap to predict that Seattle would become "another Detroit." A few others predicted our fate was to be Cleveland or Buffalo.

This destiny is not within the misguided and injurious powers of today's city political elite, however. Backlashes and elections happen.

Detroit faced an unusual set of calamities to become synonymous with urban decline. Even Seattle's missteps won't compare.

For a start, consider the current differences:

Detroit suffered 275 murders last year amid the highest level of violent crime in the nation. By contrast, Seattle hit 28 murders, although the number is rising higher this year.

I've just stopped responding to them. It's gotten ridiculous. We get enough abuse from the president and the GOP, but then to come here and see others just spewing the same bull*hit... So, I just ignore them. They can go back and forth together all they want, but I ain't biting the bait.

You sorta just did take the bait, even in indirectly replying to them.

Seattle police car set ablaze with officer inside: Man arrested
By Mallika Kallingal and Andy Rose, CNN 4 hrs ago

A man is in custody after he allegedly threw a flaming piece of wood into a police car while an officer was inside, according to police in Seattle.

Authorities say the officer was looking for a suspect reportedly carrying a burning piece of wood in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

When the officer confronted him, the suspect allegedly threw the burning wood into the police car while the officer was still inside and fled on foot. Other officers chased him into a parking garage, where they tased him and took him into custody, police said.

"He lunged in, he ran, and the driver's seat was already in flames. I thought the officer was still in the car, the driver's seat was on fire and then within minutes the car was engulfed in flames," a witness said told CNN affiliate KIRO.

As officers were arresting the suspect, the flames from the burning wood engulfed the patrol vehicle, police said.

"All of a sudden the car blows, catches on fire. We're like, 'Oh snap.' And then flames just started getting bigger and bigger," another witness told KIRO.

Seattle police say one officer was taken to the hospital. Assistant Chief Deanna Nollette told KIRO his injuries were minor, "some minor burn wounds."

Neither the suspect nor the injured officer have been identified.

Aerial video from KIRO shows the police car gutted by the fire, with scorched paint and some external plastic components melted on the roof. The partially burned piece of wood is also visible hanging from the front driver's side door.

One of the officers is believed to have discharged a firearm during the incident, but the suspect was not hit.

Business in former CHOP says 4 months later, area still not back to normal

Nearly four months after the occupation known as the CHOP, a Capitol Hill business owner says his neighborhood has calmed down — but things still aren’t back to normal.

Richmark Label owner Bill Donner, whose business has stood on Pine Street across from Cal Anderson Park since the 1970s, said protests and violence have quieted down … but so has business.

“All in all, it has been calmer, no disruption for us, doors are open, but not much activity on the Hill still,” he said. “Most places are boarded up, some have opened a little bit … it’s got sort of a ghost town feel up here now.”...

A Victory over Antifa in Portland? Mayor Claims Win Over Far-Left Rival
Mairead McArdle 3 hrs ago

.

Mayor Ted Wheeler declared victory Tuesday night in Portland's mayoral race over his far-left challenger Sarah Iannarone, a political newcomer who declared "I am Antifa" during her campaign to unseat the embattled mayor

"I want to thank the voters of Portland for the opportunity to continue serving as their mayor," Wheeler said during a press call Tuesday evening as he maintained a healthy lead of about 20,000 votes over the course of the evening, which ended with 90 percent of the vote counted.

Load Error

The 58-year-old Democratic mayor commended Iannarone and her supporters, who he said have "passionately pushed forward important ideas."

The Associated Press has not yet officially called the race for either candidate. If Wheeler holds onto his lead in the mayoral race until it is called, he will become the first incumbent candidate to win a second term as mayor of Portland in two decades.

"This has not been an easy year for any of us, and I know many of you are frustrated with the direction of our city," Wheeler said in his brief remarks Tuesday night, referencing the struggles the city faces related to the coronavirus pandemic as well as the nightly violence by protesters.

"We're going to need to come together as never before to address short-term issues and the long-term changes and investments needed to rebuild our economy, rebuild confidence in law enforcement and restore hope for our future," he said.

Iannarone, 47, gained support among progressives who were galvanized against Portland Police's response to months of protests downtown, which have devolved into violence almost every night since late May when George Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis police.

She previously allied herself with Antifa, the anti-fascist far-left group whose members have been a mainstay of the riots in Portland since the spring.

"To those who say Antifa are violent thugs: I am not a violent thug and I am Antifa," Iannarone said on Twitter in January of last year.

She added that "I am Antifa" because the "Red Hats," presumably a reference to Trump supporters, are "coming after brown & black people" and want to "exterminate" Jewish people, transgender people, and women's rights.

...

Wheeler, who also serves as police commissioner, was considered vulnerable in his race for reelection as mayor after he came under fire this year from protesters, police officials, and the Trump administration alike for his failure to address the nightly violence that has plagued the city.

Progressive protesters along with members of Antifa clashed often with police, and in late August, police declared a riot after about 200 demonstrators marched on the mayor's residence to demand that he resign. Rioters broke windows and attempted to set a store on the ground floor of the Democratic mayor's condominium building on fire. The next month, Wheeler announced that he planned to move out of his apartment building due to repeated protests outside his home.

Demonstrators who remained on the streets after dark engaged in property destruction, throwing rocks at police, marking buildings with graffiti, and briefly set a courthouse on fire over the summer.

Earlier in August, a pro-Trump demonstrator was shot and killed during clashes between Black Lives Matter protesters and a caravan of Trump supporters who drove trucks through the downtown streets. The suspect declared his allegiance to Antifa on social media before the incident.

Oregon Activates National Guard After Election-Related Violence in Portland
Paul D. Shinkman 20 hrs ago

.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has activated the state National Guard to support local police officers after protests in Portland apparently linked to the recent presidential election became violent, local authorities say.

.
Roughly 50 members of the Guard responded to violence in downtown Portland late Wednesday, a spokesman tells U.S. News. The team was comprised of security forces, military police and other Guard members who have completed specific training in civilian law enforcement standards, the spokesman says. Social media posts from the city appeared to show the troops in camouflage fatigues and riot gear supporting local law enforcement officers. Other posts indicated the protests were linked to Black Lives Matter activists and criticism of the outcome of Tuesday's election.

The Guard forces returned to standby status as of Thursday morning, though the state's Democratic governor extended an executive order keeping the Guard on standby through Friday, Guard spokesman Maj. Stephen Bomar says in an email.

Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said in a video statement early Thursday that a group of protesters assembled downtown and began engaging in "widespread violent behavior, such as destruction of property, smashing of ATMs and shattering of windows to many businesses and intimidating behavior."

"This prompted an unlawful assembly and later a riot declaration as their criminal behavior escalated," Lovell said...
