Quincy Jones Claim: Estate owes him $30 Mil!

quincy-jones.jpg?w=670&h=377&crop=1

http://variety.com/2017/music/news/quincy-jones-michael-jackson-estate-30-million-1202492463/

Quincy Jones is owed about $30 million in unpaid royalties from Michael Jackson’s estate, the veteran producer’s attorney told a jury on Tuesday.

Attorney Mike McKool delivered his opening argument in the trial, which is now underway in Los Angeles Superior Court. McKool said that before Jackson’s death in 2009, Jones had received his customary royalties from producing three albums: “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” and “Bad.”

But, McKool argued that that changed when Jackson died and the singer’s estate took control of his finances. Jackson’s death brought a surge of interest in his catalog, and the estate reaped an increased share of the royalties from his hit songs. But Jones was not allowed to share in the bounty, McKool contended, and indeed was not even informed of the increased royalties until after filing suit in 2013.

Why if he received royalties for years and they just stopped coming that is called stealing. Do you think he was getting royalty checks for 20 years for no reason. If there was any sort of increase in revenue he should be gettting it.

See the comment below. The admit to not paying him his due and want to settle for about 3 million when the Jackson estate has been making millions of dollars since MJ's death.

“We believe the evidence will show that Mr. Jones is not entitled to anything but a fraction of the money he’s after,” Modabber said. Since Jackson’s death, he said, “Mr. Jones has been paid over $18 million, and he will make millions more.”

John Branca, Jackson’s longtime attorney and now the co-executor of his estate, was the first witness. Under questioning from Jones’ lawyer, Branca said the estate had offered Jones $2 million to $3 million to settle the case, which is what he believed Jones is owed.

Branca and Jones’ lawyer sparred over the definition of a “videoshow” in Jones’ contract, with Branca claiming it pertained to music videos and not to movies such as “This Is It” or life performances such as Cirque du Soleil.

“It was never our practice to cheat … Mr. Jones,” Branca testified, as the debate became heated. “You’re creating a false impression.”

Branca acknowledged that the estate had erred by failing to give Jones a credit for “This Is It.”

This is no shade to MJ this is about the two attorneys he choose to manage his estate and the manner in which they have been conducting themselves. I have said on the estate topic wills or trusts somehow mean the artist wishes are just not honered and attorney's seem to think actual contracts cease to exisit when the artist passed. They certainly do not expire and neither do copyrights.

It's amazing to see how contemptuous MJ fans can be of the producer who helped make MJ the icon he was, is and will be.

Like you all wouldn't want your royalties if you were in his shoes.

Let the judge and jury sort it out.

If he doesn't have them, or enough of them, the court will rule against him.

But it wouldn't have gotten to trial if he didn't have a triable issue of fact on what he's owed . . . which the defense has apparently conceded.

Excellent points, I agree. AT FIRST, I thought Quincy was just trying to get money from the Estate because he is senile and a big phony (I really don't like Quincy at all after a lot of things he has said) but now after some evidence has been presented I think there is some truth to this case. The two John's running MJ's Estate are SHADY and SNAKES so I would not be surprised if this is true. They have done a number of things against Michael's wishes and what he wanted in his will. I will wait and see and allow both sides to prove cases.

Your right, your not a MJ fan so you don't know the ends and out of the MJ Estate.

Quincy was not a good friend towards Michael. However, Michael's Estate has been very shady and there might be some truth to this. They have not followed all what Michael wanted either so I am going to wait and see if Quincy's has a case. He was not credited on some of those posthumous projects so while he is a senile turd, he is right about some things.

Co-sign not a Quincy fan and I do think senility is making his true colors come out but you cannot just decide to not pay someone their royalties and expect to get away with it.

I agree. I don't like nor trust the MJ Estate after they sold off MJ's prized Beatles/Sony AVG catalog so I will always hold off and wait before judgement in these cases. They have done a lot of shady things but we will see.

I'm gonna guess you mean either "ins and outs" or "beginnings and ends "...

At any rate, it doesn't take being an MJ fan to be able to watch and listen and understand what transpires in an estate when details have been made public...Regardless, I remain thrilled and satisfied beyond measure that P never succumbed to QJ's selfish clutches...We are the world, indeed.

It's funny how Quincy Jones is called senile when he's seen and done like a billion interviews over the past 60 plus years giving historical accounts of the evolution of music.

I bet right now, he can give the most in depth interview on the planet about the state of the music better than any musician or music critic out there right now...

he's worked with all the great luminaries starting as a teenager playing music for the likes of Ray Charles himself at the age of 14

he's owed every dime he's seeking (althought he won't get it) because pseudo historians who have been given the platform to tell MJ's story is attempting to erase his entire past out of the equation.

and MJ when he started his adult solo career, he's the one who approached Quincy Jones about seeking a producer to conduct his debut album, not the other way around.

If they owe him, they owe him. It's the Jacksons et al, So it's likely they probably do. Quincy must have got himself a sweet deal. Is he chasing checks for the theme tune to 'Ironside', the score to 'The Italian Job', his work on 'The Wiz' ect constantly?. I suspect not. I'm past caring to be honest, I'm glad Michael is away from the circus of Q and his family.

Yeah, we'll, we'll try to imagine what silence looks like.

It should be if he had maintained closeness with his family and people like Quincy, his life and career wouldn't have ended the way it did

Quincy has been in the scene for sixty years plus, before MJ was born, and Ive never anything said bad about him by any of the litany of other artists he's worked with

And he always said a great album is not the product of one person but the effort of many
