I see we have touched a nerve here lol

Being logical here....in my opinion, the best releases I have seen came from Eye. They went all out for their releases (I MAY have a few myself) They know who the guy is, so he would not be "outting" himself and have an agreement that he no longer put out releases on his own. That being said, they could learn a lot from someone who put a considerable amount of time and energy (obviously not alone) in to putting out amazingly well produced releases.

Why not keep your enemies close and learn from them. Casinos do this, the feds do this, the antivirus companies do this.... a lot of organizations learn a lot from those they once vilified.

Certainly not the worst idea and worth a conversation anyway.

I'm sorry but the outtakes collections were a MESS. No quality there, even less respect for the fans. If this is your standard that's scary.

but looking athe vast range of collections we have from live soundboard through to cleaned up studio tracks gives an immediate resource & access to some great stuff. Think about the Flesh sessons for example?

I'm glad you brought The Flesh leaks up.

.

Not sure which bootleg had it first because I had them from another source, but IIRC the album first appeared on that Japanese Crystal Ball/Flesh CD. Awesome release in terms of sheer content, of course: a pristine CB + The Flesh, that was aweseome.

How was it bundled? Forced into 2 CD's with The Flesh first followed by CB on CD1, and the rest of CB on CD2.

Would you want an official release like that? I would not.

.

The album then found its way to a BFTP volume, a messy tracklist with all kind of songs, some new and many others rereleases of songs we already had in similar quality, i.e. you have to buy 4 CD's to get the content of 2. They didn't even bother to keep the whole album on a single CD, it had to be splintered on 2.

Would you want an official release like that? I would not.

.

Then IIRC the first complete Flesh sessions release was that Sabotage bootleg. Again it was an odd "2 new CD's of music for the price of 4" mix of new leaks and tracks we already had without quality improvement, and again they didn't even bother to try and keep the sessions together, with tracks splattered all over the 4 CD's in the middle of the rest.

Would you want an official release like that? I would not.

.

Try to imagine what a "Complete Flesh sessions" boxset would have to be, even putting aside the fact that what we have is already edits and that there's more in the vault, let's say they just release those maybe alongside Conversation Piece: ask yourself how the tracklist should be organized, which tracks should be put on a same CD with which, and which shouldn't, etc. Check the recording dates, the sessions, and try and figure how that should be organized.

.

My bet is Junk Music wouldn't be followed by Eternity and you would't find a Jill Jones remix on it.

.

Now is it cool that thanks to the bootleggers we get stuff? Sure! But as to whether they're more skilled than an industry professional or some of us other fans for a professional archive projerct, well... lol

No. They're not.

WTF? A little aggressive on that response but I can appreciate your passion for the subject. Why don't you enlighten us on what our standard should be?

Rehash and tweaking aside, I think EYE does a pretty dang good job.

Yeah, I don't see the necessity for the tweaking, but at least they were instrumental in getting a lot of stuff out that was previously unavailable outside of the higher trading circles. Their physical product was pretty good, too.

My point exactly...the packaging is what I appreciate. There were never any official releases that had the level of detail these EYE releases have.

Absolutely not. At the very least though, they should reach out to us here, in a poll type fashion. A year ago I would have said no to this, since it was my assumption their thought process was to release items that would cater to the masses, but Piano & Microphone 83 put that theory to rest.

I'm not fond of people charging money for music that doesn't even belong to them, but I at least admire bootleggers for sharing what elite Prince fans selfishly keep to themselves. Even more than that, I admire those who leak recordings for free so that the rest of us lowly fans can actually hear some cool unreleased shit lol

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but haven’t the posthumous releases so far actually been from bootlegs, not the vault? Moonbeam Levels and the extra disc on Purple Rain sounded like bootlegs, not vault tracks, to me. In some cases blatantly so. And we all own boots that sound better than Piano and a Microphone ‘83, whatever the source of that was.

As far as we know everything that was released so far was sourced from cassettes not the original vault tapes.

Except NC2U that was apparently created from both the Prince and Family multitracks, or possibly a cassette of the Prince version + the Family multitracks.

NOTHING COMPARE TO YOU COME OUT FROM PRINCE ESTATE

RIGHT AFTER BOOTLEG LEAK

IT SOUND SAME TO POOK

They weren't sourced from bootlegs, but you're right in noticing that none of the posthumus releases sound as clean and tight as genuine master tapes would. PRD outtakes and Moonbeam Levels were sourced from cassette copies, P&AM83 was taped on a cassette, and NC2U was at least partially sourced from cassette too.

And it's a disgrace that 3 years after his death, this is all we got so far.

...and soon we will have 15 versions of songs written for others...

sorry, 14 tracks we already know. ..cause one we already have, officially.

This acutally should've been an extra CD to any other (unreleased) release. Just like P&M'83.

(sigh)

-

About the sound of the releases so far, don't forget that he was a mess in preserving his own material. He couldn't care less in what state they were.

So from whatever these people find in or out of the vault, they also need to know exactly how to handle Prince's stuff... either by his ears and respect, or for the current market of released recordings. (Things change fast these days). (And i'm not a sound technician... )

-

He often didn't care thàt much for the sound of things either (I read somewhere), he only wanted to record stuff as fast as possible and have it released as fast as possible.

He wasn't very patient, and due to the industry, his patience was always put to the test. He felt pushed, and pushed himself, despite the quality of things - that we know.

Yeah! razz

Bootleggers are known for willfully ruining tracks before sharing them, and who wants a scratching mono-CD of outtakes while the Estate holds on to the top-quality originals? And then, two years later they can sell the same songs in improved sound-quality. lol
