Got the tears flowing here again too. Tears of joy and pride, but also sadness at being reminded we only have the past now. There will be no more P sightings to get giddy over, no new P events to get ticket's to, no new tweets from PRN to watch for. Life got a bit duller after P left this world.

I just watched Tyka accept the award on behalf of Prince. The tears are flowing again- but they are tears of happiness. Happiness because the world has not forgotten our beloved Prince. What Tyka said, heck, HOW she said it, made my heart ache again. I think she truly loved her brother. Did I hear correctly that this is the third time that Purple Rain has won this award? Wow!

I loved everything she had to say. Very heartfelt and I appreciated how she used Prince's own words in her speech.

I will admit that I'm disappointed that the AMAs didn't doing any sort of special tribute though. sad I know it's the AMAs but I found that upsetting. I didn't want any artists to sing his songs (as that never works out properly) but some video clips of him performing/speaking would have been much appreciated. Were any of you surprised they didn't do ANYTHING?

I don't mean to hijack the thread. I just was quite upset, though maybe I shouldn't have expected anything to begin with. sad

Admission is easy, just say you believe and come to this place in your heart... <3

I think Tyka Nelson did a great job accepting the award on behalf of Prince but I kinda hoped The Revolution had been invited as they were an integral part of this album.

I am so relieved to know that Tyka is actually going to be a great spokesperson/keeper of the flame. No matter what we've heard, she and the rest of the family are our connection to the man and music we love and I'm thankful that for the time being, it seems his legacy will be kept alive and she seems very capable to articulate what we all feel.

How can you tell with all that hair hanging in front of her face and those weird glasses? However, as someone else here said, she does have some of her brother's "swagger"... And she lost that at the end when she got all emotional. Nothing wrong with that, she's only human.
Also, doesn't the "984 songs" sound suspiciously close to the year Purple Rain was released? hmmm

If that's the case, she could have picked up an Oscar.

I pretty much got the opposite impression.

Her love for her brother seems very real to me.

She seemed to be genuinely struggling to control her emotions.

I think she did a great job IMHO.

There's reassurance for me at least in both her choice of words and the passion with which she delivered them.

Maybe we could cut her some slack, because Prince is her beloved brother after all and she's been left holding the baby.I imagine it's already proving to be a very tough gig with a heavy heavy load of responsibility.

What I mean by strange is I thought her voice sounded like a preacher in the beginning. I also thought she was nervous . I think the Revolution along with Tyka should have went up to accept the award

Uh maybe the Revolution had other plans Tyke doesn't have time to wait on the Revolution, Sheila E, Mayte or anyone else. Let everyone honor Prince on their own time. Tyka is his sister. You are not!

She does preach sermons in church. I thought she did a great job. And I did see a genuine love for her brother's loss.

Exactly. I mean, she knows that crying makes the news. Then she mentions Paisley Park as if it is some sort of large museum/gift shop, which it is. Just because she was his sister, does not mean they are close. Looks like a lot of people bought it though.

I don't trust her, why show emotions now all off a sudden when she didn't do it before? and people seems to have forgot this part of the ET interview:

When he asked "What do you miss most about your brother," and she began her answer with "I don't miss anything"

"It wasn't hard at all," Nelson said about coming to grips with Prince's death.

Do any of you Tyka Haters personally know her or any member of Prince's family? Stop taking your anger/grief of Prince's death out on her, please. Prince is gone and no amount of the bashing/hating is going to bring him back. He'd be ashamed of how she is being treated here on this website. She is the closest connection we have to Prince now so treat her with some respect, please.

I just was quite upset, though maybe I shouldn't have expected anything to begin with. sad

I forgot to reply to your post, but I also thought that it was a disappointment that there was no tribute to Prince from the AMA's.

I think there sadly seems to be a lack of respect from a few members here. Some of the comments strike me as pretty mean-spirited, bitterly cynical, utterly dismal and thoroughly undeserved imho.

I imagine Prince being very proud of Tyka for going up there and accepting the award on his behalf, though I can scarcely imagine how hard it must have been to give that speech, whilst fighting to keep her emotions under control. It would be nice if folks could give her a break and maybe bear in mind that she is not accustomed to being in the public eye and dealing with the media.

Does anyone seriously believe Tyka enjoyed being exposed emotionally in public and on TV like that? Not a chance imho. Surely nobody would. Suggestions that her grief is affected seem beyond ludicrous to me. She would need to be a wonderful actress, and to what possible avail would such an alleged performance be? Seriously, words fail me. confuse

We’re just fans, but she’s recently lost her brother for any favor. Family is family, and at least in my experience most siblings form a very strong bond of love.

I may be mistaken, but it looks as though she has found herself in the unenviable position of having the worry of making key decisions regarding nurturing Prince’s legacy, stewarding the care of his wonderful music, looking after Paisley Park and overseeing the charitable work too.

That seems to me like a whole ton of 24/7 responsibility and pressure, which would be a mighty big ask for even the most exceptional, experienced & wise individual (which thankfully she may of course very well be, as I thought she certainly came across well, as a really strong, determined and caring woman, when giving her speech).

I could be wrong, but I doubt she would be taking all that on (or indeed cry on live TV) for any other reason than through deep love for her brother.

With all Tyka has on her plate I reckon that rather than unnecessary, unmerited, negative swipes and gripes, she could probably use all the help and support from family & friends, and goodwill/prayers from us that we can give.

It didn't matter if they weren't close she is still his sister! He didn't have a wife or any children like MJ did, which was his choice, so Tyka being his only full sibling is gonna be the one speaking on his behalf. We ain't bought shit. She's his family You are not!

Thank you for this. I'm a new member here and I don't want to start/cause any type of bad vibes but I couldn't just sit back and read the nasty comments from folks who really don't have any idea what is in Tyka's heart and soul. I'm going to take it at face value that she loved her brother very much and is truly grieving for him. I did post previously that I found her statements odd regarding that she had already done her grieving and had two years to prepare for his death and that there did seem to be a lack of emotion from her, but I don't think that I slammed her for it. We all grieve in different ways. I'd just hate for her to come on this site and see all of the negativity directed towards her and the rest of the family. Do we really think that it's going to help the situation? Nah, didn't think so.

This. It's really sad to see. What has Tyka ever done to anybody to garner all this hatred? We're all angry and hurt that Prince is no longer here. We're all still grieving. But let's not take out that anger and grief on the family or the people running the estate. I honestly think they're trying to do the best they can under the circumstances. 💜

I'm glad to hear that they haven't allowed some of the nastier things that have been said here to color their overall opinion of many of the fans on the org. Most of us here also loved Prince for the unique individual he was aside from his musical genius and it's still a devastating loss that is really really difficult to work through.

That was an odd interview. I mean, she said she knew for 2 years he was going to die? Yeah, something just seems off about her as if she carried resentment for years about her brother and has finally come to terms with it now - suddenly - because she stands to inherit millions. I mean, good for her for getting through tough times. Perhaps the reason she comes of as unemotional or fake is because she had her heart broken a long time ago when she became a prostitute. Not trying to be mean either.

Yes. You are trying to be mean, and it is really unnecessary. It's really not any of your business what she did or didn't do in the past. The fact remains that her and the entire Nelson family are trying their hardest to keep PP open and not have it to be sold, and they are trying their hardest to keep the fans happy. I'm tired of Tyka getting bashed, when every single one of us have skeleton's in our closet, too.

So what if it was an an odd interview. Prince could be odd at times too. They're related. Tyka doesn't have to prove anything to anybody about her emotions or unemotions. Prince didn't come off emotional either.

Casual viewers must see this award as pure BS...Just because he died, the AMA gives him this award for an album released 32 years earlier.

It's very hypocrite because the AMA usually never gave aard to Prince, especially the last 25 years, where he released most of his material.

It doesn't help the popularity of the album neither, because, IIRC there was no song from the album played when they announced the nominees and the winner.

Close the last 20 years. The AMA'S gave him the "award of merit" in 1995 and the achievement award in 1990 which is more than 25 years ago.

"Prince defied the odds. A black teen from Minneapolis with a goal to electrify the world. He had the courage to be different. With his vision, and God-given talent, he is STILL one of the world's most respected and loved artists. What he told me, was that he wanted to be known as the world's most prolific songwriter. And with 984 titles to his credit and counting, he has done just that. In the words of Prince, 'With love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases. And we all become one being, singing one song.' On behalf of Prince, our wonderful friend, teacher and brother - I humbly accept this award. And me, my brother Omar, my brother Alfred, my sister Sharon, my sister Noreen, and my brother John, we'll keep this for you at Paisley Park. Until we see you again, this is for you."
