Minnesota Vikings plan Prince tribute for Sunday night halftime show

If only we could see this on TV but I'm sure NBC won't show it so they can show their stupid talking heads instead. Still holding out hope the local KARE 11 affiliate might be allowed to show it.

http://www.vikings.com/news/new-stadium/article-1/Vikings-To-Unveil-New-Pregame-and-Halftime-Entertainment-Elements-For-Sundays-Home-Opener/e33ffd50-5fc7-4d80-8bdf-760547d6f355

Vikings plan huge Prince tribute in stadium opener

The Minnesota Vikings are going all out for the grand opening of U.S. Bank Stadium.

The centerpiece of the night will remain the game, of course, a huge Sunday Night Football matchup against the hated Packers to be played in front of Al, Cris and the world. But the Vikings are giving the expected 66,000-plus fans in attendance more bang for their buck to celebrate the occasion.

According to the Star Tribune, the festivities will include DJ Skee (I'm not familiar with his work), an Icelandic soccer captain, Mountain from Game of Thrones (why not?), the Minnesota Orchestra, and an elaborate tribute to Prince.

How big a deal is this to the Vikings? They successfully petitioned the league to get an extra minute added to halftime to facilitate all the moving parts for their show. The Minnesota Orchestra will take the field during the break, a collective of 70 different musicians. A group of 215 volunteers will make sure the field in cleared in time for the scheduled start of the second half.

The Iceland soccer star is Aron Gunnarsson (great name), who we surmise will take part in the new "Vikings Skol Chant", a take-off of the "Vikings War Chant" we saw this summer when the Icelandic soccer team returned home from an inspired run at the Euro Cup. See below:

As for the Prince tribute? True to the subject, it's pretty much a mystery. We do know 15,000 square feet of projection mapping will be laid across the U.S. Bank Stadium turf for the show.

That should be cool. I wish Prince was still around.

Was thinking this earlier when they made the announcement for his tribute. Would rather be getting $ together to see him, not a tribute to him sad

So true. Life is not fair. It's nice, though, that the Vikings are going to celebrate his life.

This is on sbnation:

"The first touchdown at U.S. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Minnesota Vikings, didnโ€™t turn out as well as home fans would have hoped. It was a first quarter Green Bay touchdown.

And even though the drive wasnโ€™t an ideal way to ring in a new stadium, the stat line is surprisingly Minnesotan. Itโ€™s an homage to Prince, the Vikings fan and music legend who unfortunately passed away earlier this year. Princeโ€™s full name is Prince Rogers Nelson. Aaron Rodgers threw that touchdown to Jordy Nelson.

Rodgers to Nelson. Really.

Twitter user Ryan Henning was one of the first people to to notice the correlation between the touchdown connection and the icon. You can call it a coincidence, but this is incredible."

touched Prince was also the final person on screen for the primetime emmy awards' memorial tribute tonight. I didn't expect to see him. Then I thought there might be a chance once Bowie showed up. He was on screen for 3 seconds. He threw a kiss and bowed. It was very touching.

Living here and watching my fellow Minnesotans mourn as a community for his loss is overwhelming at times. I am a 40 "something" year old man and find myseld choked up at simply the whisper of him and other acknowledging him as I do. It's crazy. I thought at times I was alone in this and he is everywhere here. The Vikings game would have been too much to take now that I see what I missed. The State fair was amazing with the purple and symbols everywhere. It was really heart warming and heart breaking all at once. The tribute sold out in 5 minutes...I mean what the hell? I would never had expected that.

Glad I got tix for the first day of tours at PP. Right now I am feeling left out of all the rest of the events... sigh pout

I think they would end the night perfectly with a huge production like this!! Damn! they need to record this version bc it was absolutly beautiful!!!!

i have no doubt that Prince LOVEDDDD this rendition as he smiled down on them from Heaven,

They killed the small part of the guitar solo too. Good Job gus!!!

Wow, maybe they could have packed the stadium after all...

i have no doubt they could have!!! i am heartbroken i didn't get one.

I just logged in at 10:30 WST and there are still still single seats available in all price ranges. Even the $19.99 tickets although the one I pulled up was behind the stage. Try it again!

I just went to the Ticketmaster site just to try my luck (since I can't go). I got in right away and I was offered single tickets in the highest price range to the lowest. I can't access it now though... It seems that you just have to keep trying. TM is a pain to deal with. They are known for holding back tickets and releasing them later. I got a great ticket to see Stevie Wonder two years ago the day before the concert when it was supposed to be sold out. Just keep trying!

dang right it should have. disgraceful and disgusting that it was not in my opinion. and they are already hitting people on You Tube earlier today taking away sound siting copyrghts. telling people to dispute it and they;ll put sound back. appears a couple of folks did just that and now the audio is back up and running. ive saved the video for myself b4 they take it completely down. this needs to be out there everywhere. and it needs to be incorporated into the tribute concert but with a huge gospel choir in my opinion. can you imagine

i'm sorry it got you upset. Big HUGGGGSS TO YOU! I know how u feel i've been crying off and on all day long. just when i thought i was getting a grip on this loss. sigghhhsss.

I'm on my lunch break right now and I can't even watch it because I'll go back into work in pieces. I saw small clips of it last night and between it and the Emmy Awards tribute, I've been a wreck today... So depressing, but I'm so happy they gave him such honor.

The singer was, I believe, one of the Steeles - either Jearlyn or Jevetta.

From what I understand, the orchestra parts were arranged by none other than Tommy Barbarella. Tommy, if you lurk the Org, that was fantastic!

Words can't even describe how emotional it was to be there last night. I had huge goosebumps and a big lump in my throat throughout the performance -- the orchestra was beautiful (the video didn't even do it justice).

When his guitar riff filled the stadium, timed with the pictures and purple confetti flowing down from above -- the tears flowed. People around me were crying and joyously cheering at the same time. And singing along through tears.

I was a little embarrassed when the lights came on (because I was clearly crying), but comforted to see how many people in my section also had tears flowing....it was incredibly touching and therapeutic to see so many people (including some "macho" football fanatic grown men) wiping tears from their faces when the lights came back on. Complete strangers were hugging and comforting eachother. We all miss him so much. So, so much.

Wow, beautiful. It reminds me of the Purple Rain viewing I went to after his death. Not a dry eye in the place. Every time he came on the screen, every one screamed, every song, everyone danced. All of us perfect strangers, cried and celebrated his life in that movie theater, and it was one of the most moving experiences of my life, so I can more than imagine the atmosphere that you were a part of.
