PEACH & BLACK PODCAST: Clare Fischer Tribute Episode

Our first episode for the year is dedicated to the late genius composer and musician - Clare Fischer.

Fischer was responsible for arranging strings and orchestral parts for many of Prince's songs over the years. He was featured heavily on the Parade / Under The Cherry Moon soundtrack, The Family album, the Kamasutra album, and classic songs such as "Crystal Ball", "Pink Cashmere", "Old Friends 4 Sale", "Damn U", "The One", "Te Amo Corazon", "Elixer" and many others.

However beyond the Princeworld, Clare was a recognised genius in his own right - an innovator, a band leader with some 40+ albums under his own name, a sideman to some of the greats, a Grammy winner, and a recognised composer/arranger in the Jazz, Classical and Latin worlds.

What a talent. RIP Clare Fischer.

No joking here. I really rate the song "Elixer" very highly. The album as a whole is another story which I won't get into here. But the song "Elixer" is up there with the rest of the classic Prince & Clare collaborations IMO.

You can add me to the list of people that thought he was a she.

I would definitely like to check out some of his "solo" work but with such a huge discography it is tough to know where to start.

Has Prince mentioned his passing? Hopefully he is working on some kind of tribute album and we will have a chance to hear some of Clare's recordings that are in the vault.

I felt the same after researching for this episode. I had always assumed he was just an orchestral/strings composer/arranger. I had no idea he was heavily Jazz/Latin influenced who wrote for Big Bands and solo piano etc.

I recently purchased his 2001 album After The Rain, which from what I could gather, is the closest one that resembles the 'sound' he produced for Prince - i.e. orchestral/classical stylings, strings-based with some wind instruments, originals, 'movie-score'-esque... Figured I'd ease myself into his discography. It's great! I'm keen now to check out more of his earlier material from the 60s/70s.

Can we please thank Reverend for an amazingly banging new podcast art!   Stunning stuff there, Rev.   You must be a professional or should be.   If not, I may kick your ass.   lol   Don't like seeing talent go to waste.

Wonder how long before Prince sues.  lol.   Don't do it, you would win the case.

Nice show, guys. The only way you could have made it better was by interspersing clips from some of Prince's songs w/ a big Fischer presence, or maybe even an informal "Top 10," just amongst the panelists. I would argue that "The One" also enters the top tier of the man's output precisely b/c of Fischer's presence...

Anyway, thanks for an afternoon's entertainment while cleaning house...

Thanks for the new show guys. I really enjoyed listening to your respectful and informative tribute.

I'm gonna check out some of his stuff too. I was laughing when MC probably for more than the second time said enthusiastically that he wanted to go check out some more of his work.

Good show.

Thanks for the glowing tribute to a brilliant arranger....Hope y'all spend some time discussing the Jill Jones album someday, as it's worthy of an entire show by itself, and features some of the best of the Clare Fischer/Prince work.

We were going to do that but with the recent SOPA drama thought we would err on the side of caution for a little while wink

The777Man

Thanks for another great show with even more insightful perspectives than usual. Clare Fischer will surely be missed. One question; what did Clare Fischer think of Prince's music ? What did he think of the 'finished product" ie his collaboration after Prince put his touch to them ?

I did hear you guys mention that he respected Prince but I didn't get an answer to the above questions. Anything on what Prince thought of Clare Fischer's solo work ?

Looking forward to your next podcast whenever you guys can find the time......

Well done guys , i'm glad u did a tribute to clare , I think because I became a 'fan' of prince in '86 that I feel it's the end of an era & a great loss , i've always loved clare's input in prince's music. I too intend to check out clare's work , frankly I dont know why I didn't sooner. xxx

Awesome show guys!

My face is always like ' omfg ' when I read you all have a new show! So much excitement. Haha

I learned so much listening, and like you guys I never knew how much strings played a part in Prince's music. Sometimes you have to find it. 'Elixer' has become one of my favorite ballads EVER! It's really one of his best works! SO glad you mentioned it!

I definitely will study and explore more works from Claire. I just started to JUST right before he died, he's an amazing musician. His son is pretty awesome as well. Thanks again!

I am really looking forwards to a CD review again! I keep anticipating 'The Gold Experience' BUT at this point I will settle for anything...JUST BRING IT ON..GOOD GAWD! Haha

Huh, Joao Gilberto released an album (Joao) in 1991 that features contributions from Clare Fischer. That could be an interesting combination.

I'm subscribed to the show anyway, so I'll def listen to this episode once I get a chance.

I've been on the search to start with his solo stuff too. I wonder did If I would come across spectacles such as his work on Chaka Khan's "Earth Song/Egyptian Song" and Prince' "Crystal Ball".
