Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic era 1999-2001

World full of lovers, city full of good time — Rave!

It might take U some time but U will learn 2 see
We kiss and like rain we fall into...

I wanna make U climb this chain around my waist so I can prove
Some days I feel tangerine
Beggin' 4 a kiss is such a dull routine
Whenever there's a tide U can let it ride inside your interior
I was just wonderin' why people feel so all alone (All alone)
Break the gold chain that I gave U
White girls, Black girls, Latinas — oh so pretty
I would never pick the flower of my favorite protégé
Cuz your voice could cure my every pain
Dreams of sovereignty, they tried 2 come between U and me
The higher the stakes, the higher the sky

Don't hate me cuz I'm beautiful

a love/hate era for many fans
lot's of collaborations
the distortion of the Cross 2 the Christ
kinda chaotic time, it started almost a year before the album rel went in2 2001
here goes

* most of the photos are from actually shows & events, so if you have any corrections or updates please feel free to side Orgnote me. And do add your own... share share

Sam Jennings, Director for the NPG Music Club
Sam Jennings began working with the Internet in 1994 while studying fine art, design, and art and technology at The Art Institute of Chicago. In 1999, Sam helped create Prince’s Love4OneAnother.com site and in 2000, launched a new website for Prince called NPGOnlineLtd.com focusing more on Prince's music than the previous collective. While developing NPGOnlineLtd.com, Prince and Sam began experimenting with releasing Prince music online, creating an experience that went beyond single downloadable tracks. They wanted to bring Prince's strongest supporters together and establish the direct connection Prince had visualized. When NPGMusicClub.com was unveiled, they gave Prince's fans what they wanted most – music and a vibrant online community of people who are all connected by Prince’s music. Earlier this year, NPGMusicClub.com won Billboard’s Digital Entertainment Award for "Best Use of Technology by an Artist."

http://www.papermag.com/arts_and_style/1999/06/prince-the-revelation.php

Prince & the Revelation

artist 2000

The Artist sits erect in a tight, striped jumpsuit that zips to his neck, a calf-length coat and gray boots (high heels, natch). Straight hair tousled, eyes luminous, he looks just like Prince of 1989, sexy and lean. But 10 years later, there's a slightly distant cast and quiet stillness to him -- if I lean forward, he might turn out to be a hologram. A notoriously difficult interview yet always the gracious host, he makes me a cup of tea. Despite the fact that the Artist has been through some very dramatic changes during the past few years, in the presence of such chilled-out clarity it feels like two Geminis just shooting the shit. Of course, one of us has an unpronounceable glyph for a name and is an international star who changed the face of music.

This is the year of Prince. When he wrote the hit song "1999" more than 15 years ago, he wasn't thinking about the date itself but the growing sense of living in an apocalyptic culture. Now that we're in the thick of millennial madness, the song's refrain is running through the heads of another generation of music buyers and makers. How does the Artist relate to the pop culture he helped form? Well, for one thing, he is not about to disappear from it -- even if it made him change his name.

"My father gave me the name Prince," says the 41-year-old Artist of his famous moniker and the need to abandon it in order to reappear. He says that when people started using his birth name to refer to a media-made persona, it lost its personal resonance. The Artist pulled away from that alter ego -- the Prince he used to be -- to save himself. "I'm telling you, the pimples go away, all the stress in your system leaves," he says. "They weren't talking to me anymore."

The Artist is getting ready for his first major-label release since leaving Warner Bros. in 1996. It was his boyhood label, signing him when he was only 19, and his growing pains were publicly scrutinized. After a tumultuous relationship with the company, Prince legally changed his name to a symbol in 1992 to get out of his contract. He is, however, currently at work on Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (scheduled for a fall release, with distribution by an as-yet-undetermined major label), his first album of new material to be affiliated with a major since 1996's Chaos & Disorder. Rave is the first album that the Artist did not produce, and it features several big-name collaborators. From the man who wrote "slave" on his face in 1993 while disentangling himself from big-business hell, this is news.

Late 1990s/early 2000s was when he looked best, imo.

Rave is definitely underappreciated. It's not great or anything, but it's not that bad. "Rave", "The Greatest Romance", "Tangerine", "The Sun, The Moon and Stars", "Man O War", "Strange But True", "Prettyman" - all very good, if not great songs. Never understood so much love for "I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore", though. Oh, and the remix album (minus "Beautiful Strange") was absolutely terrible - I can't believe people like it better.

Anyway, thanks for the thread, OldFriends4Sale, but I unfortunately have nothing of value to add to it.

I'd love to see a Newpower soul era thread next. 1998 was one of my favorite Prince periods with Crystal Ball, The Truth, Kamasutra and Newpower Soul. I think a lot of other great songs came from that era, like IIRC "Madrid 2 Chicago", "Breathe", "Beautiful Strange", "S&M Groove" etc..

Yeah I love that photo, something interesting about Prince in nature photos, like the Kid & Apollonia in a barn with hay and horse or in the country side. It works for some reason.

I just pulled this album out the other day. I really liked it back then but it now actually feels like an early Musicology or 3121. Same sort of glossy production. Some good songs on it however, not the best but good ones.

even though this was not a very inovative time era.

the songs were good. i enjoyed this album very much except the

"everday is a winding road" cover. "undisputed" "hot with you" and baby knows

also did not tickle mt fancy. but i thought the ballads were great !

many i feel were directed towards mayte.

this era also gave us the Prince classic "I Love U, But I Don'tTrustU Anymore".

this has to be a top 5 prince album of the 90's

*great thread you always do a wonderful job with these oldfriends4sale

I agree, I actually loved the look, and usually a good 'wild' look with Prince equals good era/music

But not so much with this one
