Mixed feelings.

Do i want to defend her?--because perhaps the auction had been decided on prior to the investigative reports being opened to the public and like some people say -- she was trying to move on.. Do I want to defend her because auctioning pictures doesn't make them disappear...after all, they will be online forever if she ever wants to see them again. But his 10 year old picture--that's some b.s.

Or do I want to chastise her for auctioning so much stuff in this particular month and do I want to question her honesty when she states that Prince was never around in Spain. If he was never around why does she have so many of his more high profile outfits from the late 90's still in her possession. Was Spain just his dumping ground for stage costumes in 98 and 99?

For about a week I was appreciating her more because she defended him against Sinead. She and ruth Argate (SIC) on twitter were the only ones who did.

[Edited 5/2/18 21:51pm]

It's a choppy situation for me because I still like Mayte but The school picture gets me too, she could just give it to PP. Did he have doubles of some outfits? Does PP have some of those same outfits she's selling? What about the shoes? If they are dupes, then sure but if not, give them back to PP. The jewelry...heck I'd save that for my future generations. The china, I would've also saved it was specially made for her. sad

I know there are love/hate opinions regarding each wife/woman Prince was involved with. Not trying to open up any of those debates. What I will say is Prince and Mayte had and lost a child together. That's some heavy shit to go through and never completely recover from. If it makes her feel a little lighter that her son is together with his father in the fterlife, I'm happy for her. And would be for whomever would be/is in a heartbreaking situation like that.

This. Absolutely.

It’s a tricky situation. I can understand why people are upset, but I also feel that it’s not fair to expect her to just give away the stuff for free. The reality is that there is a market for these items.
.
I wonder if the Estate or Paisley Park personnel have reached out to her about purchasing some of the items. However, there is so much going on with the Estate that there are probably bigger fish for them to fry.
.
Ultimately, I think it is important to examine the root cause for why she ended up with so much of Prince’s stuff——their divorce. I am not trying to throw Prince under the bus, but I also have to acknowledge the reality that prince’s actions were the main reason why they divorced, and thus, why Mayte ended up with all of this stuff in the first place. He left her. Technically, Mayte had to ask for the divorce, but that occurred after he “backed her into a corner” by running around with Mani behind Mayte’s back, contriving the “annulment”, feeling up on another woman in TGRES music video, among other things.
.
Keep in mind that she did not want a divorce; she also reached out to him multiple times after he and Mani were divorced, but he rarely responded to Mayte’s initiations. She wanted to stay married to him, and while she is human and has faults, it was Prince who gave up on their marriage and put Mayte in the position of having to request a divorce. These items that were once his/theirs are her property as she acquired the items through the divorce settlement.
.
Prince could have bought back items that he wanted from Mayte; he had 15+ years to do so, but he did not buy back the items. Seriously, what do people expect her to do with all of “his” stuff (that belongs to her)? Throw it in the trash? Keep it in cold storage forever? Keep as much of the stuff in her home as a reminder of that earlier time in her life? She has a daughter, her animal rescue, her dance classes, and other things happening in her life. Does she not have a right to move on with her life?

She has a right to move on. But she always has insensitive timing when it comes to stuff like this. she is not perfect. I am glad you acknowledged that. She could at least keep his 10 year old picture. I don't think she really lied about Prince (except for some details here and there..) but I wonder if she and many of the associates are always honest about themselves.

SHe does have the right

and I dont blame her for getting rid of STUFF..

Stuff keeps us attached

and Attachment is VERY DIFFERENT to LOVE

Im not going to judge her,

I can only imagine how much Pain she has suffered because of him.

Jeepers..Here am I..Never even met the Man

and I STILL CRY sometimes

and my heart STILL ACHES

so Mayte would have a next level to the power of 10 kind of pain...

Of course she would want to rid herself of the pain that attachment creates

and up to her how she chooses to do it....

PRH,

I don't understand why she would auction off a picture of him as a child, however, I don't see that listed on the current website. I also don't understand why she would auction off the signed handwritten letter in purple ink to her apologizing for director Lisa Bonet not picking Mayte to be in the music video “Walk Don’t Run”. (I think the website got the name of the video wrong; it should be "Walk Don't Walk".)

.

However, I feel that the reason I don't understand her behavior is because I have never been in her shoes. She's always going to have the title of Prince's ex-wife, no matter what else she does in her life.

.

There's an article in The Mirror, originally published June 12, 2015 and updated April 21, 2016,

https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/princes-ex-wife-mayte-garcia-5874346

In this article, Mayte said:

“But I think I’m now screwed for life because my first relationship was the most bizarre relationship ever and I’m not normal any more. I’ve kind-of been spoiled and I guess I am kind-of screwed-up now.”

.

She will never have another relationship compare to she and Prince's relationship. Even if she were to have another serious relationship or even re-marry, that relationship could never be close to what she and Prince had. All the songs he wrote for/about her. All the performances they did together. Their wedding--he spent $100,000 on the flowers and composed the music. They had a son together, and they lost another unborn baby.

.

In some ways, she could and did move on while he was still alive. She started her animal rescue, she adopted her daughter which has given her the opportunity to experience motherhood once again. But then, in other ways, she couldn't move on while he was here. Think about it, until he died, the world only knew of their son as Boy Gregory. That was their child; she carried that child. She waited until after he died to share that his name was Amiir. People speculated about why they divorced and what the "annullment" was. Did he cheat on her? Did she cheat on him? What went wrong?

.

My guess is that people asked her questions about him frequently before he died. And I know that people continue to ask her questions about him since he died. Here are some guesses about questions that people may have asked her:

What was Prince like?

Why did he change his name to prince?

How was he as a father?

Why did you get divorced?

What kind of toothpaste did he use?

Who made his clothes?

Why did he become a Jehovah's Witness?

Who was the foo-foo master?

She's always going to have the title of Prince's ex-wife, no matter what else she does in her life.

.

Shoot, I think about what might have been with the two of them if things had worked out differently for them, and I didn't even know them! So if I'm thinking that way, I can only imagine how often those thoughts must cross her mind, a constant stream of "What if" questions about their relationship and marriage.

.

These are some "what if" questions that I've had about them:

-What if Mayte had spent more time in Minnesota than Spain during the latter part of their marriage?

-What if they went forward with a tracheostomy surgery for Amiir? Would Amiir still be alive? Would they have stayed together and had more children?

-What if she had gone along with becoming a JW? Would they still be together?

-What if she had made a trip to Minnesota before he died? How would he have reacted to her coming to see him? Would he still be here?

.

If I'm having these thoughts, I can only imagine how she must think about these various situations. And I can only imagine how having all of those possessions from that portion of her life when she was with him would be a constant reminder of her relationship and marriage to him and their son, and would make it hard for her to move forward with her life. She has a daughter and furbabies for whom she has to care, plus the daily routines of life, just like everyone else, feeding, grooming, dressing, driving, bills to pay, and so forth.

.

There are certain items that I'm sure she will keep from their time together. I hope she keeps the picture of 10-year-old Prince or offers in to Paisley Park. However, I cannot fathom what it is like to be her. I can only try to put myself in her shoes, to try to understand her point of view.

.

She has her own life to live just as I have mine to live. I don't know all of the details of her life, nor is it my business to know. Everyone has their own opinions; what is tasteful to one person is distasteful to another. She would live in paralysis if she listened to all of the criticism she receives on websites like the org. However, she has to do what is best for her, and if auctioning off possessions that used to be Prince's or hers and Prince's, I can't fault her for that and I don't feel that it's my place to judge her...s long as she doesn't auction off the stuff on April 21 or June 7, (and I don't think that she would do that).

I wish she would donate at least some of it to Paisley Park instead. Hacking his child picture for money seems kind of cold. There is some greed involved in this..you got to admit that. Hell, people are a hot mess. They have a myriad of motives for what they do and what they don't do. I think fans might be too quick to attribute one motive to people's actions--when the reality is that people have many personal justifications for the things they do. I try to remind myself of that when I either start getting too angry at an associate or start getting too sentimental about what an associate says. It doesn't mean some actions or inactions are not worth calling attention to..but I don't want to go on a tangent here like I have before.

However, she has to do what is best for her, and if auctioning off possessions that used to be Prince's or hers and Prince's, I can't fault her for that and I don't feel that it's my place to judge her...s long as she doesn't auction off the stuff on April 21 or June 7, (and I don't think that she would do that).

spit Looks like Prince was in the "doghouse" with M1 because of the casting of the "Walk Don't Run" video. I can't wait to have a look at that.

I'm pretty sure it should be "Walk Don't Walk", not "Walk Don't Run".

Also, I stand corrected: After looking at the actual letter, I see that he wrote this note to her when she was probably around 16, after seeing her tapes that her mother sent to him. " eye keep all your tapes in a little secret section of my house. Only eye know where they are." After an opening price of $1,000, bids are already up to $6,000.

This photo of him as a child is one that only surfaced recently, within the past couple of months. Perhaps it surfaced because of this auction? I agree, I don't like that she is selling that childhood photo of him. She should offer it to Paisley Park and they could buy it from her. I have no problem with her selling the one of him as an adult that's next to it in the catologue (he's wearing the good question shirt).

.

I have no issue with her selling all of his clothes and accessories. She has to have spent an enormous amount of money storing all of those items. There are numerous other people who are selling Prince-related memorabilia. Prince gave a lot of clothes and accessories away to people and he had to know that these items would end up at auction at some point.

Lovejunky said: It’s a tricky situation. Does she not have a right to move on with her life?

yeahthat nod clapping wildsign

as long as she had asked the park if they wanted any items & they declined & Julian’s doesn’t auction them on an insensitive date, can’t begrudge her.

She pulled his childhood picture? That’s good, that should have been common sense not to put it up for sale.

It's her stuff. If It were important to Prince I'm guessing he would have bought it back from her long ago or made sure she didn't get it as part of the divorce settlement. I'd it were important to the estate/Paisley, I would think they would have contacted her as well.

Kind of cold Mayte. Ironically, probably no one needs to buy the picture. One of the beauties of the internet (or flaws depending on how you look at it) is that we can print the damn picture off the internet for free or look at it for free. So, I hope it doesn't sell. The outfits are a bit tricky. I mean I am not really against selling them but it did occur to me that "costumes" and "clothes" were one in the same for PRince. If John Lennon's family members were selling John Lennon's Sergent Peppers jackets, it would just be selling cosumes. If they looked through his old t-shirts and sold them, it would be selling his clothes.

Well to which of the warring fractions?

.

And that is one of those school photo sessions you purchase about 50 of them so you can give them to people. The family probably already have a bunch.

.

Hell I still have a few from 1996 and from 1976

Maybe they already have a copy of the photo? Maybe there's already a copy of it at Paisley?

You think I based what I said on a single instance? Well, I didn't. I've heard and read plenty from Mayte over the years (that's what the "has never" is meant to imply) - and my assessment stands.

But let's face it - none of Prince's women were rocket scientists.

[Edited 5/2/18 10:57am]

That is pretty sexist. Manuela Testolini has founded and ran a worldwide non-profit business. Sheila E is a very talented musician who has ran her own independent music business for years. Vanity, Melvoin, Chavez, Basinger, Troy Beyer, Andy Allo to name a few lol, are all articulate, strong and independent women.

How, exactly, is it sexist? Let me help you - it isn't. It would only be sexist if I said they weren't rocket scientists compared with men - which I didn't. Would it help if I said that, in a lot of ways, Prince isn't all that bright, either?

Manuela founded her charity with Prince's money - it isn't like she raised it herself. What music business does Sheila run, exactly? Does she have a label? No. She plays music and stole someone else's logo to print on t-shirts.

I'm not even going to bother with the rest of your list because, frankly, I just don't care that much.

Go ahead and be butt hurt on their behalf, if you like. But what I said is not sexist - not least because I am a woman, myself.

Michelle, I agree, If they were family, they probably got a picture at the time it was taken when he was a child. Like we all give school pictures of our children to family and friends.

.

As for this one picture, there is so much at PP, seriously would one picture make a difference?

.

When I go to and read the estate thread, most people have little to no love/respect for the family. With the exception of his sister Tyka, did any of them really know him? And many question if Tyka was really close to him at all. They, the ‘family’ are inheriting the wealth of a man most of them really didn’t know, nor did they do a thing to earn a dime of that wealth. So, why exactly would Mayte GIVE items to the estate? Seriously? And with everything tied up right now, they might be grumbling because they can’t sell stuff to make a buck for themselves.

.

As for what Mayte is selling, as someone else said before: we know what she is selling, but we don’t know what she is keeping. Let her let go of this stuff, which has probably become an albatross around her neck all these years. Many people would love to have something worn/owned by P, this is their chance. It’s a win-win. She gets compensation for stuff she doesn’t want, and someone gets a collectors item from their favorite star.

.

As for timing, maybe it isn’t Mayte who decides when the auction will happen, maybe it is the auction house deciding on the date. And seriously, these are just ‘things’. She has memories of her life and her child, and no picture, note or clothing item can change things whether she keeps these things or not. Mayte or anyone selling something he owned, no matter when the timing doesn’t change anything.
