4 Jill Jones. A campaign to get her due recompense & credits on Prince releases.

I just saw this on Facebook.

soulhead_PaisleyPark_JillJones_JillJones.jpg

Jill Jones was instrumental in providing artistic support and performance in Prince recordings both released and unreleased. The Purple Rain Deluxe Edition includes "new" songs which have incorrect credits and Warner Bros. should engage and recompense Jill for her work and give TRUE credit where its deserved. Even if this means future pressings of PR Deluxe have to be altered.

Prince was revolutionary in fighting Artistic Rights and to do this to Jill (someone who had first hand experience for years) is disrespectful to her and his legacy.

4 Jill Jones. A campaign ... releases.

Christ...you'd think she'd given birth to the thing. From what I understand, she was told to chime in here and there, and then went home. Who cares?

Let's hope it doesn't come to that; however, I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility. In a perfect world, the estate will meticulously credit and compensate any and all artists who participated in previously unreleased Prince music that will be newly released from The Vault. I'm not sure if it's any indication of intent, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe Jill did sign and share the petition.

Interestingly enough, this is Jill's new cover photo on her Facebook. Make of it what you will.

If she owns the copyright to anything she can sue. I hope WB and whoever else gets involved does not think they can steam roll over the associates.

Dave Hampton talked about this on the Prince podcast with Mike Dean. There are people trying to destroy Prince's legacy and erase people, vaules and beliefs from the narrative.

Does anyone think he would have been okay with We Can Fuck being put on the Purple Rain disc?

No it isn't real. Race had nothing to do with it. Do you know how many people, black include that did not know even up until recently that Jill Jones was partially Africa-American?

.

I doubt it is at the forefront of many peoples minds.
.
She should have her due credit. But there is no need to try to get people up in arms with race, when it has nothing to do with it.

Back Sept or October she had some things to say about the Estate in some interviews, that she said might end up alienating her from any future connections and such...

I don't know

Because people do not know she is half black that means race has no relevance to her situation. Even though it has relevance to her. You got an issue with trying to read people's minds or superimpose what you think onto others.

Legal recourse probably depends on her contract. Didn't Lisa say that sometimes Prince would have you sign something to say you weren't getting credit even though you wrote this but you will get credit for writing that even when you didn't? Sounds like Jill certainly is the kind to keep contracts and notes, so she probably has pretty good evidence there.

.

There is some history with background vocalists suing for proper credit and compensation, but those are largely suits where vocalists were told they'd be background vocals but their parts were actually used as lead parts -- way different payment recommendations there.

.

Best example is Martha Wash, who was paid to sing guide vocals for demos but then found her voice used as the lead part in a #1 (along with a model lip syncing her part).

.

No less importantly, Wash became an accidental linchpin for artists' rights. After the singer brought various lawsuits against producers and record labels for proper credit and compensation, federal legislation was created making vocal credit mandatory for all albums and music videos.

.

Can't find anything about the terms of that federal legislation, or if anything actually became of it.

Hate to say it, but frankly, uncredited background vocals historically affected women of color more than anyone else. Black women have been singing parts mimed on TV by white women for decades.

.

That being said, I don't think that's what happened here, but it could be a sensitivity.

One more thing, honestly, if "Take Me With You" has a co-lead vocal track that's a blend of Ap and Lisa (and not just Lisa on bgv), Lisa could possibly call that deceptive advertising and improper credit.

I doubt she owns any forms of copyrights, I mean she cant even get her solo CD released for real from 1987 because she does not own it. I mean if PRINCE didnt own his masters do we think JILL owned her copyrights to anything?? A lot of PRINCE's artists are not even credited, he himself recorded and wrote under different names, what's next, Morris Day sues Jamie Starr? There is so much uncredited stuff and things PRINCE did in the shadows back then and throughout his career, do you really think a label is going to actually dive into the insanity that PRINCE was doing? they could not even keep up with his albums now you want them to catalog the frigging vault.

Jill identified herself as a Black woman.

That is not race baiting. It how she self identifies.

Self idenitification has been HUGE- that is the debate about public restrooms.

None of us can discount, ridicule or tell someone to be quiet about their self-identification even if it makes us cringe. This is why people are protesting because how can I tell someone who they should identify with? That is so not right on so many levels . I cannot even imagine doing that to another human being? I AM NOT God.

Not at all

All who had a part deserves to be recognized at this time. It does not matter how I personally feel about them as peeps. It is what it is.

I hope that none are excluded even the ones that rub me the wrong way or make me cringe.

It is a legacy and narrative for future generations. Prince worked with many people, with different ideas , cultures and mannerisms. I cannot pick and chose only the ones I personally have a liking for -

Good for Jill.

--It is really not that hard to find out if she had the copyrights on something and yes it would be WB responsibility to research this stuff so lawsuits do not start flying. In fact Dave Hampton said when he was approached about the vault it was obvious that the powers that be did not understand the research and time it is going to take to work on the vault. People will sue if they are copyright holders. Even if Jill is not a copyright holder would it have been too much to ask for her input? What are they going to do when they get to 1999?

I am not race baiting.

I only was responding to self identification. One thing I have always loved about Prince is his inclusion of all people no matter race. He respected us all and encouraged that from all of us all the while respecting the differences.

.

Respect and love for one for one another means acceptance of how people view themselves, no matter race, ethnicity, culture or sexual orientation.

THAT was my post.

.

I do not promote baiting of any kind for any reason too much negative energy.

.

I do believe in respecting people for whichever way they choose to self identify- I mentioned how she decided to self identify because of someone stating her partial blackness. My point was that.

.

Much respect but no way do was I baiting; We all need to respect each other and take care of each other and as Prince used to always say have love for one another.

.

There is enough hate in the world . We are our brother's keepers, we must love, respect, and enourage the positive.
