She referenced "Let's Go Crazy" and "Beautiful Ones" with regard to his recording process (how he would be alone in the studio while doing his vocals), and how she felt about the songs he was recording. She clarified during the interview that most of the album was done by the time they started rehearsals for the movie. He was flying to LA prior to this time to record other tracks. We can go round and round on this one, but I guess the only one to clarify the time frame would be Susannah.

My point was that she was only referencing the songs recorded around that time period because that is when she started to experience his work in the studio. As a side note, Dez Dickerson didn’t even leave the band until May. Anyway, we’ll agree to disagree. You are correct in that only Susannah can clarify.

The last date for the 1999 tour was April 10th. Dez was done at that point, and Wendy was asked to join the band - from what I have read. The main reason I think that their connection happened before the July/Aug '83 time frame is due to Susannah describing the intimate contact from him when she went to the studio in LA, and then states, "that following Summer they had started the rehearsals for PR movie and I went to visit Wendy and Lisa...."

Okay, that's it....I promise smile

Dez’s last performence with Prince was May 16th.

Princevault.com shows Prince attending the MN Music Awards that day, and then playing a song during the Jah Wobble concert at First Avenue with Jesse Johnson. Says they played Cloreen Bacon Skin. No mention of Dez being there. Do you have another source stating they played another show? Just curious...

Right, okay. He joined the band for one song, but was no longer part of the band. Per Alan Light's and Matt Thorne's books, he and Prince agreed he was done at the end of the 1999 tour.

According to Dez Dickerson, "My Time With Prince" there wasn't a concrete decision by the end of the tour. It wasn't, (April 10th…!) that's it, you're out the band! It took some time to come to a solid closure on both their ends. Dez and his wife were even on vacation for a time before being called home by Prince to sort things out, and even after that, he needed more time to think things over before coming up with a solid resolution as to leaving the band. Hence, still being on the scene for his last performance with Prince May 16th. It's not too far off the mark to think that Wendy officially joined the band around the month of May.

Okay, interesting. A bit different from the information I remember reading in the other books and his statements there. He had said that he and Prince had talked before he joined his band, and had agreed that he would give him 3 years in his band, and then he would start his own thing. He said he could not do another long tour. Other people in the camp also stated that things became difficult with him on the 1999 tour. Wendy had "auditioned" for Prince at one of the sound checks, and Bobby Z said he knew she was in at that point.

I wanted to share some of the info with you a few days ago from Dez's book 'My Time With Prince" regarding his departure from the band, but I got a little too busy. I had some time on my hands this weekend, and I went over some of the info in the book. Here are some of the highlights showing that Dez's split with the band was still undetermined by him and Prince when the tour ended April 10th and it seems the better part of April as well. There was definitely contention between them on the tour and Dez was uncertain in his decisions, but Prince still offered Dez the choice to stay on for another three years after they got back from the tour. It seemed May was indeed a more plausible month that they came to a resolution and Wendy officially joined the band. I didn't want to write it all out as it's not a kindle version to copy and paste, so these are just the highlights of the paragraphs, but If you'd like more info, orgnote me.

*

"Becki and I returned home after the tour. I needed to clear my head and think through some serious issues regarding my future with the band." Pg 232

*

"I decided a trip to L.A. was in order." pg 233

*

"The trip was wonderful. We saw some friends, spent time with some relatives, and I had some great meetings." Pg 233

*

"While we were there, a phone call came. Prince had gotten wind that I was in LA. And requesting that I returned immediately for an important meeting." 233

*

"He talked a lot about the movie- it was the next big phase of the master plan. Eventually, he worked his way to the pay off-the movie was going to require a major effort. He wanted a major commitment as a result-to re-up for at least three years. He felt it would take at least that much time to make it, promote it and tour behind it." He offered me two alternatives. One, (depending on your perspective there may be other words for it) - one, I could commit to another 3 years or two, he would have C, R,& F become my managers, and get me a record deal. Pg 234

*

"So, the choice was placed before me, I told him I wanted to think about it… Pg 234

*

"I called Prince and told him my decision." Pg 236

Thanks for posting the book details. It was great of Prince to offer Dez those options. It ended up working so well with Wendy in the band, so it was just meant to be. Wondering if Prince knew Dez would opt for option #2, because Lisa has stated that Wendy was offered the job the day, or shortly after the day she played at the sound check during the last leg of the 1999 tour - maybe asked as a backup option at that time, and then confirmed once Dez made his decision...

I don't think it was a consolation prize for not doing the film, and I don't think he did it because he thought it was the right thing to do. Prince did whatever he wanted to do, especially at that time. It seems to me he went through quite a bit of effort - recording Empty Room, arranging with the jeweler ahead of time and picking the SIX carat ring, flying Susannah to NYC, sending her the wordplay note cards at some point after that, and then asking her to be his wife on the balcony of the hotel overlooking the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Not too shabby in my opinion! I think he was worried about losing her, and wanted to present her with this show of committment. But, then again, only Prince knows what he was actually thinking at that time.....and Jerome - Jerome may know what Prince was thinking at that time, as it seems he was his "wingman" and close friend. Just depends on how open Prince was about his relationships.[Edited 2/21/18 17:38pm]

No I don't think it was a consolation prize. She had a part it creating scenes with Prince for the movie. Well I think 'it is the right thing to do' is also a 'do whatever he wanted to do' thing. I don't mean marry her by force or anything. I mean look at the songs he was writing, a lot about marriage and that time period Prince said he 'needed community' that they were a community for him. Which suggests family. Prince's father was interconnected with Prince's people during that period. And if you even look at the people in the camp. Almost everyone was related somehow, whether family or friends from growing up. So I think the atmospher for marriage was there. And on top of that people were married/getting married and having kids.

I think he did want to be married to her. But just not 100% committed to it of course.

Yes, it has been said by many in his camp that Prince hated when people in his inner circle left him. However, it seems it was often his quirky behaviors (need for control, difficulty communicating, mood swings) which caused their departures. You're right, he was at that age when guys typically start thinking about settling down, but I think he was till young enough to dismiss that if he was not really feeling the love. I actually think your assessment rings true more with Mayte than Susannah, based on things I have recently read. He was mid 30's at that point, and she was pregnant - his age, Christian beliefs, and "do the right thing" mind set would fit with that situation....but that's another chat topic altogether!

Violetcrush.....you have mentioned your "opinion" about Prince marrying Mayte because she was pregnant 2x in this particular topic. I'm just curious, how did you come to this conclusion?

I would have to say it is not plausible that she was pregnant when they married. A few things confirm the validity of that statement. (1) - Prince insisted Mayte begin taking the pill before engaging in an intimate relationship w/her. I believe pregnancy before marriage was an undesirable situation to Prince. I also highly doubt Mayte would betray Prince by discontinuing to take this preventative measure secretly. (2) - Prince composed, unbeknownst to Mayte, a beautiful song, "Let's Have a Baby" as a wedding gift which he played the night of their wedding....I believe he also presented a crib to further relay his wish. This would be odd if she were already pregnant, no? (3) - Amiir was due in November of 1996, as Mayte explained in her book. Due to Amiir's unknown medical condition (doctors told Mayte and Prince the child was not hitting projected growth milestones in utero and there were other concerns) and Mayte's issues during pregnancy, he was born prematurely via a scheduled caserean. Mayte and Prince thought the pregnancy occurred on their wedding night. That's a viable possibility as the medical due date would support that hypothesis. (4) - Prince proposed to Mayte in August of 1995. He did so during a phone call while she was overseas on a promotional tour. I believe Prince expressed his desire to marry asap and February 14, 1996 was chosen as the date. So, based on your thoughts, all this simply aligned with an "oopsie"?

I simply ask because this type of opinion denigrates the love, respect and years they spent together. Interviews (print and media), tell a much different story. To say Prince married her ONLY because she was pregnant is an incredibly uninformed statement to opine. I don't know if you visit the various forums/topics on the site but may I suggest you visit this thread - http://prince.org/msg/5/452536 - as there is a wealth of information (interviews , quotes, music, etc.) that unquestionably document Prince's love, adoration and respect for Mayte.

Oh, and, fwiw, I like Susannah and loved the interview. I feel she spoke about Prince w/love, respect and compassion. They shared a magical time and there is no doubt he loved her very much. I believe he loved many women, in different ways and for different reasons.

Take a look at several videos on YT published by "The Real Mayte Garcia". Link below to the information regarding the pregnancy and wedding. Very interesting and enlightening information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81B2KqbLePg

Watch the other videos as well. She has mocked his size, clothes, and lied about her past dance experience.

Regarding the baby - Mayte has stated in live interviews that she carried the baby "to term". She had a C-Section because the baby had an enlarged head due to the skeletol deformity. She could not have a vaginal delivery. The baby was born in October, which would put the conception date in the month of February - not March. Prince would not have scheduled the Oprah interview at the same time the baby was to be born - does not make sense. The interview and album release were scheduled a month after the expected birth. Prince was not looking to get married in 1995. Prince may have insisted Mayte use the Pill (again, because he did not want to settle down at that time); however, that does not mean she followed his request. I'm not insinuating that he did not care for Mayte or love her in some way. I just don't think he was "in love" with her. It has been stated that their relationship issues began not long after the death of their Son. Prince moved her to the Villa in Spain while he spent most of his time in the states or touring. He then began an affair with Manuela, sometime between 98-2000.

She had a tough situation though. Parents shipping her to MN at 16 - it must have been very difficult for her, although I'm sure she was more mature than your average 16 yr old. Prince was so much older, and in complete control of the situation. He began an intimate relationship with her on her 18th birthday - I believe she has stated that - which would have I think been '93. Susannah stated he was crying in her arms in '93, and was very unhappy. Also, in the 94-95 time frame he wrote to Susannah telling her about his first Ballet, that he loved her and to please write.

Very interesting and enlightening information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81B2KqbLePg Watch the other videos as well.

Thank you for suggesting the YT vids (The REAL Mayte Garcia) as a reference to support some of your claims but I'll have to pass on viewing any. While I did view a portion of one many months ago, I could not get through it. I cannot remember which of the vids I viewed but I do remember feeling repulsed by the fact that someone, unknown to Mayte, could take sound bites and media clips, insert erroneous information and proclaim it factual. I can only ascertain that the individual who created this YT channel must be an angry, bitter person to take precious time to vilify another via lies, misinformation and hate filled content. I choose not to support that. I would rather spend my time trying to find some positive light with which to engage my mind.

Regarding Prince and Mayte's son, Amiir, I would be interested in viewing some of these "live interviews" in which you say Mayte "carried the baby to term". Her book, pgs 202-206 specifically, reveals a very different story. She explains she went to the doctor, on the advice of her Mother, because she was experiencing cramps. The OB determined she was in preterm labor (seventh month) and sent her to the hospital immediately. She was admitted because of this, and explained "days turned to weeks. Weeks stretched to a month.". During this stay, a C-Section was scheduled, Oct 16, to coincide w/Amiir's lungs developing enough (via med intervention) so that his chances of survival were increased.

Your comment about the conception occurring in February is exactly what I stated (I have bolded both comments) so we agree that it could have happened on their wedding night. They were married February 14 and Amiir's due date was November 6. This would be exactly 8.74 months - https://www.google.com/se...+pregnancy - which is the determined gestation period of a human fetus.

Emancipation's release date was November 19, 1996. Two weeks after the projected due date. The music (creating, promoting, etc al) never stopped for Prince and I believe that indeed, he would have promoted the album leading up to and after the birth of Amiir. After all, this album was filled w/love songs to his wife and also recognized his impending Fatherhood.

Mayte was born November 12, 1973. She graduated at 17.5 y/o in May of 1991 (page 106 of her book) and chose to move to MN (page 107) because "Prince wanted her near". Due to her minor status, Prince took legal guardianship of her (for a mere 6 mos.). Her parents did not force her into anything. Aamof, Prince spoke to her parents assuring them he would keep her safe and protected.

Mayte and Prince's first intimate encounter occurred on February 9, 1993 (page 147 of her book) This would calculate her age at 19.25 y/o, not 18. I believe you are confusing Anna (Garcia) Fantastic's first sexual experience w/Prince, which did occur on her 18th birthday - https://www.thesun.co.uk/...e-he-died/ - .

You are correct, Prince did begin an extramarital affair w/Manuela at some point while still legally bound to Mayte. I believe it is absolutely heartbreaking that Prince and Mayte could not come together in their shared grief over the loss of Amiir. I imagine the molar pregnancy in '97 compounded their grief and rather than share their sorrow each sought individual comforts in an attempt to repair their broken hearts and shattered dreams...Mayte spoke about her fervent hope that they find their way back to each other. Alas, it was not meant to be. I can only sympathize w/each of them for experiencing such devastating loss.

The YT video Prince & Mayte's Unromantic Shotgun Wedding" provides audio of two interviews with Mayte where she stated the baby was carried to term. The baby was most likely conceived prior to the wedding. However, I do empathize with their loss - nothing more devastating than losing a child. Other videos also provide information regarding her mocking of Prince in various forums, and again, making false statements concerning professional dance training. While some of the comments are a bit harsh, I think it does bring to light conflicting statements she has made throughout the years.

Regarding her arrival at PP - she was a very young girl, and not a legal adult. Most parents would never allow that situation to occur unless money and fame are the priority. I have an 11 year old daughter - I don't care how talented I think she is - I would never put her in that situation at 16-17 yrs old. Even the Engineers working at PP at that time have stated they felt badly for her, because she was like a "deer in headlights" - just no clue about things that were happening there.

Regarding the Emancipation album - it is known that Prince wrote and sequenced his music based on his feelings and life experiences. Disc 1 is very different than Disc 2. "Right Back Here In My Arms" was recorded in mid 1995, In This Bed I Scream recorded late 1995. He also re-recorded I Hate U Summer of 1995 with additional and very specific spoken word referencing someone he lost but still loved. Goodbye was also slated to be the last track on a 1995 configuration of the album, but was later replaced by The Holy River. The album's songs changed over the course of that year. The songs changed when his situation changed.

Anyway....these are of course just my thoughts. We are way off of the original topic of this thread smile

When did Susannah say that Prince was very unhappy and crying in her arms in '93? I hadn't heard that before.

During her interview with Toure Susannah was talking about her relationship with Prince - that it wasn't just about sex, and he often called her because he just needed a hug. She stated that "years later, in '93 he called me - it was 3:00 in the morning - can I come over?. I said, sure. He came and said, "I just need a hug - no one can hug me like you can"...so I was just giving him a big one, and the tears were just coming down...something was going on with him at that time - I don't know where he was at, but he was not happy."

Also, it was hard to make out, but I believe Susannah then stated that he said, "I'm gonna come back for you".....and then she said she thought oh you poor thing, what is happening?

I do think that even though Susannah left Prince in late '86, they continued to spend time together off and on for several years. I think he needed her in his life. She references "In Living Color" as a show that they would watch together, but that show began in 1990 - unless she confused that with her time with John Cusak...LOL! I believe she began a relationship with Cusak in '91.

Ohh ok. Thanks! I somehow missed that part of the interview. From what I've read,Susannah seemed to bring a sense of peace and stability to his life and I could see how he might want to revisit that from time to time.I always found the song In This Bed an interesting inclusion to Emancipation and with what she said occurred in '93,I see Right Back Here In Your Arms a bit differently.

Yes - now this is just my thought and speculation about some of these songs, but I believe Susannah's relationship with J Cusak ended around mid or late 1995. Cusak had been living with her at the time. Right Back Here In My Arms was recorded around that time. Same with In This Bed I Scream. Also, Prince re-mixed I Hate U the Summer of 1995, adding specific spoken word. He says "Last night, last night you shoulda been home, you shoulda been doing it all alone. You gave a Dog a place to bone and now your ass is all alone" Later he says "I know he didn't make you holler- and if he did it wasn't like the time we did it to Mahler. Don't you remember? You were my little nasty lady and you never felt the need to lay another down. Now I frown at the sound of your very name, cuz all you are to me is an old flame, and when it burns out I'll be free of the mouth, the lips I used to kiss. My baby, my little nasty Miss. You were the one nobody could see...no one but me. Why, why did you wanna leave...was I so hard to please? I hate you baby....because I love you" Lots of little "clues" in that remix. Love those lyrics! Prince wrote a song in '86 while dating Susannah which references Mahler #2. He wrote other songs during mid 1995 that he gave away to other artists, like "Van Gogh" - lyrics say "and I've waited so long, seven years and I'm still holding on. So much love we're missing, a million tender kisses, but you won't let it be. During his speech at the 1995 AMA's Wendy and Susannah were the first people he thanked for contributing to "Prince's" success (he was the symbol at this point) I also thought the cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" was an interesting choice for the album - also on the first CD. That was recorded Summer of '96. Again, Prince usually didn't just write or record songs for the heck of it. They usually had a connection to his life at the time. If you look at "The Love We Make", which is known to be written for Jonathan Melvoin, Susannah's Brother who died of an overdose July of '96 - Prince wrote and recorded that soon after his death and included it as the second to last track on the album. Most of the songs had specific meaning to him.

I believe he harbored a love for Susannah for a long time. The song Forever In My Life, which he wrote for her, is quite intense. Doesn't get much more heartfelt than that.

Okay....done rambling now smile

Wow.Interesting! Yes,when I read the reference to Mahler it brought to mind Good Love which I know was written about Susannah.I remember him telling a fan once in a chat that Forever In My Life was about her.It does have very intense, deep lyrics.I really enjoyed her interview and you can tell that she still has much love and respect for him.

Yes, that's right...it was Mahler #3, not #2 smile She clearly connected with him physically too, not just emotionally. Soooooo many songs for and about her - released and unreleased. I think many in later years too.

He sounds so happy in Good Love and I love the lyrics! She inspired so many amazing songs such as Crucial and Empty Room.He was very open about his feelings for her and the songs written for her are pretty obvious if you know some of their story.I've always felt that Goodbye might have been for her as well and I agree that she may have been the inspiration for some of the latter songs.

'Goodbye' puts me in complete tears.

So Prince, whom fought 4 his first record deal & got it, fought 4 a movie deal & got it, fought 4 freedom from his WB contract & got it, fought 4 his masters & got them.Gets a curable illness & says 2 himself ok, I'm done. "Life is a Box Of Chocolates"

Yes, I agree with Goodbye as well. Makes sense as he first recorded it in '91 which is when she began the long term relationship with Cusak, and it was titled "Excuse Me, Is This Really Goodbye". Then he recorded "Violet The Organ Grinder" with the lyrics "I was on my way to another room when an image of you sweetly appeared in the mirror. Perhaps you recall, you and I were neatly in the middle of a Crystal Ball that now serves as a reminder on the wall of you and I, the organ grinder, in the greatest concert of them all". They were recording Crystal Ball when she left. Some of the later songs - I Hate You (remix), Tangerine (her favorite color was peach/orange, which he used for SOTT tour), One Of Your Tears, Wasted Kisses, and Strange But True. Always wondered about Insatiable too - not sure about that one. Although, interestingly, back in 1990 Prince and Wendy & Lisa (with Susannah) were all touring in Europe in July/August - Prince for Nude Tour and W&L for Eroica. Prince re-scheduled his Belgium concert 3 times and ended up performing at the same venue, same night as W & L. Hmmmm, wonder why??!! Might have been a rendezvous happening that night smile

I think it's one of, or is THE most beautiful song he's done. His voice is like an Angel's, and the lyrics are heartwrenching - you can feel the pain and anguish

Very interesting! I hadn't realized that those songs may have been about her.It makes sense though especially Tangerine and Violet.I'm listening to one of the Piano Mic shows in New Zealand and he played Condition of The Heart,Girls and Boys,Forever In My Life and It.He screamed just like he did in the SOTT movie "I got to tell ya what you mean to me" So many great songs that he was still including in his set lists.

I agree! I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.

Yes, on the piano & mic tour he played a lot of those songs. During the final show in Atlanta he mixed If I Was Your Girlfriend and Waiting In Vain (Bob Marley) - so good and heart-wrenching too. In the early 90's he would mix Thieves In The Temple and It together. Really good. I have video of the 6/15/92 show where he does the mix w/ spoken word and says "I want you baby, it's been such a long time..where did you go baby..I could not find..you and I could've been a work of art" Then during "It" he says "I got wet dreams comin' out my ears, I get hard when the wind blows your cologne near me baby. I can't take it, I said I want the whole nine, see this ain't about the body baby, it's about the mind" Then he screams the rest of It and plays an amazing accoustic guitar. SO good!! It's possible he was singing about Kim B though, b/c they had quite an affair in '89. Then she abruptly left him, and started dating Alec Baldwin soon after. But, It was written during Susannah's time. Not completely sure who was the subject of the mix at that time.

I didn't know that about Theives. He played it at the New Zealand show too and said during the performance "Don't you see these theives all around me? Won't you come save me baby, save me from this bitter end" That was heartbreaking to hear.He seemed kind of upset that night at the first show.He was in a better, more playful mood by the second.I think it's very possible that some of the songs on the 90's albums and later were written about Susannah and he may have been still drawing from their time together for inspiration for some of the latter songs.

Yes, the last P&M performance he played many of his songs that were inspired by the women in his life - The Ballad O Dorothy Parker, Dark, I love U But I Don't Trust You. During the mix he said, "relationships....no matter what you try to do, sometimes they just don't work out. I believe we live in a civilized world now, and we can get along. I don't want to fight anymore". Right after the first few songs he said "okay, I think I've got her out of my system". Then he began the opening to Little Red Corvette and said, "well, maybe not!" Very cute. The mix of If I Was Your GF and Wait In Vain was toward the end of the show. Interestingly, when he played I love U But I Don't Trust You...after the lyric "I remember meeting you here back in the good old days" he then said "the 80's". I thought that song was inspired by the end of his first marriage, now not so sure - unless he just applied it that way for this show. The lyric "what happened to the ring I gave you?" would only have applied to Susannah in the 80's, as he had given her the diamond ring.

I noticed that comment about the 80's during I Love U But I Don't Trust You too.I had heard him say that in some of his other performances of it during the P&M shows and it is interesting that he added that line. Some have thought he was talking about Denise but it's true that he gave Susannah a ring.I had never thought of that before and that it may have been another song that was inspired by her.He was talking about getting someone out of his system during the shows at PP as well.He said some very interesting things during the P&M shows and he came across as very open and honest.I found it sweet the way he seemed to be sharing his heart with the audience.

Yes, he was opening up a bit more emotionally. Like Susannah mentioned in her interview, he most likely knew he didn't have much time left. So sad. His Sister Tyka has stated he told her 3 years ago. Wish someone could have stopped his decline. sad
