Sheila E. has a show that day. Remember that Chaka Khan couldn't do the BET Tribute because she had a prior engagement. You don't know if these other performers are unavailable for whatever reason. Some people will never be satisfied. Tori Kelly is a singer whose talent Prince appreciated. The same probably goes for Luke James. He may have felt the same way about John Mayer. Between the BET Tribute, Revolution shows at First Avenue and this tribute, I think we've had a wide variety of performers Prince worked with or appreciated. The bottom like is Prince is no longer with us, and I think that's why some people are finding fault with every tribute. Finding fault is tied to your grief.

I don't get the complaints about John Mayer. Dude is super talented and obviously had a lot of respect for Prince. Prince was all about real musicians playing real music and that's exactly who John Mayer is. I also don't get the if it's not these set of people then it's not the real deal thing. Prince had a long career, worked with a lot of different people. Sure it would be better if Sheila E and The Rev were going to be there, but someone like Shelby J worked with Prince for 10 years. She was still performing with him in 2016. She sang at the family memorial in August. I'd take her over Jill Jones any day.

Super dissapointing to me.

I was asssuming this would be something bigger...I didn't expect the star power of the Freddie Mercury tribute, but something bigger than what we got. EVen if they had to wait to do it next Spring (on the anniversary of his death) where they could have more time to organize a more world-wide spectacle for this, which is what he deserves.

Artist and bands from so many different genre's and generations would really have a chance to make it amazing.

The current lineup is really weak...no discrepect to any of them, and I love Stevie Wonder, but he's not exactly in his prime.

If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Great lineup. I would go just to see Stevie and John Mayer. I remember hearing Mayer do Starfish and Coffee years ago and he is one of the first people I have ever heard to a Prince cover on tour. No doubt those two will do a few songs together. Questlove should be the drummer instead of Hannah. If they added D'Angelo or Bruno Mars to the bill, it would be even better. The Time is great. Fuck I wish I could go. Why the fuck is it on a Thursday night?

They can still have something next year, perhaps on April 21. Right now, I'm thrilled that there is a tribute concert happening Oct. 13, as had been announced months ago by Tyka. If those plans had fallen through, that would have been a debacle that Prince does not deserve to have attached to his name. Besides which, I think they have put together a very impressive line-up: Bilal, The NPG, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Doug E. Fresh, Mint Condition, etc. I also think that other names will be added. And the tickets are reportedly starting ar $19.99!!! AND, IT IS A SHOW TO CELEBRATE PRINCE AND HIS AMAZING LEGACY!!!! What's not to like??? Can we PLEASE just have some POSITIVITY???

Has anyone ever gotten tickets directly ftom the box office in person? I was wondering if the lottery process they use is a good thing or not? Is it worth it to get up and be there early to get in line for a wristband? Is your chance of scoring tickets better than going online?

I would really be stunned if Shelby is not there. They are probably just including her with the NPG. You can always go to Shelby's FB or Twitter page and ask her directly.

Hopefully she'll post about it today or over the weekend. If there's silence on social media then I'm inclined to believe there is some sort of falling out which would be a shame.

When Prince first passed, Sheila said she was asked by the family to be musical director for a tribute. It was reported that half of the siblings wanted one thing and the other half something else. We can only speculate on what that was, but I'm thinking one half wanted a money making big production televised. Sheila had said that she wanted to get all the original people together. I'm assuming that meant Dez, Andre, The Revolution, Mavis, George, The NPG, etc. It seems the estate is in charge of this tribute show now and they had different ideas about who should be there than Sheila. If it was her choice not to be involved because of the new direction in the tribute show with several acts that have minimal connection to Prince, then I stand behind her on that. She also had that date scheduled on her own tour, so people shouldn't just expect her to cancel one show because they feel like she should be at another. I'm going to see her next Saturday in MN. Sheila has always done Prince songs in her set, so I'm sure this time will be no different. I have to say, I've never actually met someone who wanted Shelby J to be at a show. lol I kid!

The line up of performers is wonderful!

Prince would love it because we all know that he loved most of the artists that will be performing at his memorial tribute.

It's all good!

I personally would not do this. Not because I don't think you'd get good tickets at the box office, but because you will find good tickets well after the onsale date. The only time I buy tickets on the onsale date is if it's at a small "standing room only" venue, or a venue with limited seating. Those are guaranted to be true sell-outs depending on the performer. Show at large arenas will always release tickets at later dates. When they say a show is "sold out", it usually means its sold out of current inventory. I've gotten really good tickets to "sold out" shows days before the event. Some people like the assurance of having their ticket ahead of time, but once you've gone to enough concerts you learn the system. Not to insult anyone who chooses to purchase this way, but buying tickets on the onsale date is really a rookie move. If you are willing to take a risk, wait a couple weeks before the show to but your tickets. You'll be amazed at what you find. Try this initially with a show that's in your local town. If you do it enough times, you'll be totally comfortable buying your tickets at the "last minute", and you'll probably have better seats that someone who purchased way in advance.

Well Sheila never once posted about the Rev shows on Twitter or FB. Other former Prince band members did. I don't want to over-emphasize social media but Sheila has been on there plugging her own shows. I know you kid about the Shelby J comment but she was a member of NPG for 10 years performing with Prince all the way into 2016 (plus she was part of the BET tribute and sang at the family memorial in August). Honestly I'd like to see Elisa there too. And Maceo and Cassie and Ida. Basically give me the Musicology and W2A incarnations of NPG along with the original lineup. I'll be bummed if it's only the latter.

If only the family dynamic wasn't such a mess and they all could have come together with one vision on what this event should be... sad

I agree.

However, I did expect the star power of the Freddie Mercurt, are you kidding me?!
Where's D'Angelo, Kravitz, Stevie Nicks, Nikka Costa, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys, even Beyoncé, Larry Graham, all those bands and musicians that covered his songs at their concerts throughout the years, Bilal, The Revolution, André Cymone, Sheila E, The Time, The Family, and so on (we could be here all night)?

Actually I think the last time Shelby did a show with Prince was on 7/4/14. He said in an interview around that time that he would probalby never record with her again. She was at Paisley Park in January as part of Larry Graham's band when he did a show after the P&M shows.

Apparently, Bilal had a scheduled show elsewhere on the same day as the official memorial tribute, but he will now be performing at the official Prince tribute concert.

If that's the case, that makes Bilal extra special!

Do you know what interview that was? You're right she did perform with Larry Graham at Paisley. But based on one of her tweets it sounds like one night she did perform with P and Kirk J.

x21A.png

It's possible she and P had a falling out of some kind or maybe she just wanted a break and wanted to be back home for a while. Anyway on her FB page she celebrated her birthday (it's on 9/10) saying this was the 10th year she worked with Prince. Also in one of the videos she posted about recording her new album she talks about Prince and some of the feedback he gave her on the songs. If they had any issues it doesn't seem like they were serious.

Just an edit to this post: I was browsing through Shelby's twitter posts from 2014/15 and she tweeted about P's appearance on SNL and in Baltimore and for the various HNR shows 3rdEye Girl did. So I'm going to guess she was taking a break to do her own thing rather than an actual fall out with P.

Shelby and Prince did NOT have "a falling out".

Hopefully, this won't start another problematic rumour.

Let's PLEASE try to keep it positive. Why are people so negative around here?

I will find the interview and post the part where he addressed it. As far as her performing with Prince and Kirk, Prince was DJing and Kirk and Shelby were standing by him. She did yell out a few times, but it wasn't a proper show. This isn't directed at you, but please not that I'm not insinuating that they had a falling out.

If you do it enough times, you'll be totally comfortable buying your tickets at the "last minute", and you'll probably have better seats that someone who purchased way in advance.

Has anyone ever gotten tickets directly ftom the box office in person? I was wondering if the lottery process they use is a good thing or not? Is it worth it to get up and be there early to get in line for a wristband? Is your chance of scoring tickets better than going online?

Thank you for replying. I've never had luck doing it your way to be honest but then again I'm just the occasional concert-goer. So where exactly do you find these last minute tickets? Does the venue or show's organizers suddenly release more tickets later on?
Pull your cellphone out and call your next of kin, it's about to get funky in here!

motherfunka said: Do you know what interview that was? You're right she did perform with Larry Graham at Paisley. But based on one of her tweets it sounds like one night she did perform with P and Kirk J. [Edited 9/17/16 18:22pm]

From Ebony magazine summer 2015. This is regarding Hit N Run Phase 2.

Prince:
All the musicians that played on this, they go, “He just records and he puts it in the vault.” All of them have stories. “He’s recording stuff you would not believe. He just threw it away.” I didn’t throw it away. It just has to be on the right project. And all of these fit together now. It reminds me of this time period. I can see all of their faces. And this is probably the last record I’ll do with Shelby J. She’s all in here too. And Andy Allo’s singing background here too.
EBONY:
Shelby’s a powerhouse.

Prince:
So’s Liv Warfield. Watch this though. [listening to a song transition] You know: where else would it go except there? But before, I had that whole song starting another album sequence. And it didn’t work. So now, where it’s placed, it’s right where you wanna be at that point on the album.

Thanks for sharing.

Once again, it's clear that this does NOT mean that there was "a falling out" between Shelby and Prince like a different orger began to question on this thread.

Let's keep it positive.

Why do some people have to be so negative?

This is a good line up. Yes I would like more rock/guitar bands that respected Prince and who would appeal to Prince fans be on the line up. But no big deal, I say get this thing going and to anyone attending have a good time and I pray that you all get the healing and good vibes that you need.

Life is too short to bitch and moan about meaningless stuff. All love and respect to Prince!

Thanks for sharing. And sorry didn't mean to imply you were suggesting they had a falling out. Anyway I read this several times and still am not sure exactly what he meant. lol

So I asked Shelby on FB if she was going to be at the concert and she replied yes! Woo hoo! biggrin

I'm pretty much convinced whomever is in charge of this event now has put a muzzle on people talking about it for whatever reason...otherwise for sure Shelby would be promoting it.

Thanks for the clarification. Interesting remarks from P. Is this the Ebony interview that he made them pull from their website?
