According to the Huff Post:

More than 65,000 people have registered to vote around the country in the 24-hour period after singer Taylor Swift waded into politics and said she would back Tennessee’s Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, according to the website Vote.org.

This compares with 190,178 new voters registered nationwide during the month of September.

This is what we need people like Swift telling them to vote!

Not so fast. Bolsonaro hasn't won yet. But I agree that the rise of people like him (Trump, Dutertre...) is something to sorry about

Those of us in America who can vote.

Oh, that Prince guy. Why did he have to break through internationally? Now we've got people who aren't from the US joining discussions over here! America first!!! flag party

Prince's USA activism, especially in the last few years with Black Lives Matter and the Freddie Gray protest song Baltimore was obviously on his front burner.

Yeah, what a stupid idea to vote unless the system is perfect. Prince, of all people, would want us to work with what we got. That's exactly how he broke through internationally. flag

It's not that you're joining the discussions, it's what you are saying and how you're mocking Penny's point. Spare us, please.

Freddie Gray injured himself at some point as he tried to evade the cops. He is clearly hurt when he was put in the van. I am sick that 2 of the last people he mentioned in song gray and brown.

I say this with really no malice, but who are you again??? And why should anyone care that you are "sick" about the fact that one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, spoke on things he found to be unfair? Why should you be sick? I doubt Prince was...

maybe sick was the wrong word... and this is why we should leave Prince out of it... Make no mistake I am a very deep purple fan. And this is why we ought to leave his name out of these topics. poppys should know better.

Let me get this straight.

It's MY fault for bringing up Prince's activism in a vote thread in the Prince.org Politics & Religion forum - so YOU wouldn't have to say that you are 'SICK that 2 of the last people he mentioned in song' were Michael Brown and Freddie Gray???

Just checking.

Plus, not to state the obvious, but it's apparent that Prince related to both Brown and Grey, and saw what happened to them as an injustice...

Prince touched Baltimore with concert, song after Freddie Gray's death, unrest

Last May, the "Purple Rain" singer/songwriter performed a quickly announced "Rally 4 Peace" benefit concert at Royal Farms Arena — his first performance here since April 2001. He also released a song dedicated to and titled "Baltimore," with lyrics that cried, "Does anybody hear us pray for Michael Brown or Freddie Gray?

Precisely.... because as we saw with Kavanaugh, the ramifications of not voting can be serious.

An important vote here is regarding the gentrification that is happening at an alarming rate, mostly due to the rise of Airbnbs and that type of short term rental suddenly taking over whole neighborhoods. Especially the Quarter and Treme, but in my current neighborhood too.

The law will require property taxes to be phased in if the dwelling is assessed at more than 50% in value from the previous assessment, instead of the whole thing coming due in one year. This will give people time to figure out if they can keep their home, or at least not have to have a fire sale, selling it quick and cheap to prevent a tax lien from taking their house. It is likely to pass, thankfully.

Could you please explain this? The rise of Airbnbs is also a problem in Amsterdam, a city that's in danger of being overtaken by tourists. But that may not be the same thing as what you're talking about here.

Get the youth involved!!

Ariana Grande has her fans ready to head to the polls this November.

The songstress shared the deadlines in every state to register to vote via her Instagram story, and provided a swipe up link directly to the March For Our Lives website. Within just 30 minutes, the site crashed from the influx of Arianators registering to vote.

I'll try.

Very limited housing stock in NO. Especially since 80% of the city was underwater after the levee failures from Katrina. Housing stock was not replaced. Local fat cats and speculators, especially from NY and CA came in and bought up a lot of cheap real estate and fixed it up. Property values went up, taxes followed.

Airbnbs and like short terms rentals are far more lucrative than the already astronomical rents (for regular people). The TV show Treme made the neighborhood so popular that whole streets are Airbnbs. People don't have neighbors anymore and have to deal with drunk tourists flashing their titties on the streets in front of their children. (That was NOT a THING here by the way, until that stupid Girls Gone Wild guy started it to make money).

So, poor and regular people are now priced out of homes they lived in for years, many times for generations. People here don't move much, they stay in the neighborhood. Because their property values and their taxes (not to mention insurance) have skyrocketed and they can't pay the increases.

Thanks for the reply, poppys. I understand what you mean, the same thing, investors taking over the housing market and making it more difficult for people to buy a house, is also a problem over here, not just in Amsterdam, but in the rest of the country too.

nod Too bad. Many singular authentic places that rely heavily on tourism are now slated to become Disney style theme parks. Was reading about Venice's problems with same recently.

I love my neighborhood but will probably be forced out, just like the lower east side of Manhattan in the 1990s. Luckily I have great landlords right now, hard to find. But they do have an Airbnb in the unit adjacent to me. They live in another unit. It's a historic compound with 3 dwellings. There is push back to limit short term rentals. So, I'm sort of a legal meat shield for them right now. If the restrictions are lessened, I could be tossed for more $$.
