Language and how it's used as a weapon

WHILE POSTED HERE, THIS IS MEANT MOST FOR THOSE WHO WRITE ARTICLES THAT ARE WIDELY READ. TRUST ME, THEY'RE GOING TO GET A COPY OF THIS.

Quit cursing when talking about your opponents. That's the message. Quit it.

You lose when you do it. Want proof?

Just watch our genius president in action. And this time, the term "genius" applies. For instance, what did he and Sarah Sanders do when put in a box re: prior support of Roseanne Barr?

Turned it around by using curse words from political opponents. "They've said much worse about me!" And they have.

Last night Samantha Bee called Ivanka Trump the "C" word. Do you know what that did? It made Samantha Bee - a woman with some very good ideas - completely worthless and irrelevant in the political debate arena. There is no way she can carry any debate from this day forward because calling the president's daughter the "C" word will be thrown back at her every single time. And she cannot overcome that.

I read lots of articles on sites where the authors routinely use foul language. Of course, all these articles are written by progressives. It does not matter how great their arguments are; I guarantee you this:

The second they drop an F-bomb or use God's name in vain, they have lost. Oh sure - their friends will cheer them on. But there is no possible way any middle-of-the-road, potentially winnable voter is going to give that author a scintilla of credibility. This, I guarantee you.

So quit cursing. I know you're mad. But do you want to win? Then quit cursing.

You do have a valid point Rodeo, but some people aren't as offended by cursing as you are. You've said before you can't stand a woman who curses, is it worse than when men do it? Other words are negative too. I'm totally over "knocked up" - how about pregnant instead? Everyone has their buttons.

The c-word is one of my least favorites, but is more commonplace in the UK - and maybe even Canada where Bee is from, I don't know. In the Caribbean "I'd like to molest you" means, "I'd like to get with you", not sexually attack you.

Samanatha Bee is a comedian, not a politician. She's not going around calling NFL players Sons of Bitches like the orange catastrophe, there is a difference, imo.

If the point of cursing is to let off steam, well OK. I surely do use my fair share of curse words.

But if the point is to change minds in the political arena, cursing is the surest and fastest way to lose. While Bee is a comedian, her arena is politics and I assume she isn't on TV just for laughs. She wants to change minds, but that will be impossible for her now.

Cursing seems to be working spectacularly for Trump. It is a high road/low road dilemma, good topic!

Cussing has its place. When it's used correctly and used well, I believe it is very effective.

And Ivanka Trump is still a feckless cunt.

This experience will cover courtship, sex, commitment, fetishes, loneliness, vindication, love, and hate.

Ah, but he doesn't curse! He says ridiculous, horrible, ugly things but except for the "s***hole countries" remark, he doesn't curse.

It should be easy to throw stuff back on Trump. He's an adulterer, a grifter, an imbecile, a Russian stooge, and a liar. All proven. And no need for cursing. In fact, maybe the left should do what Trump and his cronies do:

Make up nicknames.

We already have "Cadet Bone Spurs". That should be used all the time IMHO - especially on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Remind the people that he's a coward who had a chance to serve but was too scared. Didn't have the right stuff. Oliver Stone, Colin Powell and John McCain all had the guts that Cadet Bone Spurs didn't.

"Grifter In Chief" works well in all instances. As we all know, Donald Trump has only one agenda as president, and that's to make Donald Trump as rich as possible. He's a grifter who won't release his tax returns. He's earned the name "Grifter in Chief".

How about "President Philanderer"? Kind of a mouthful but as we know, Donald Trump has not been faithful to any of his three wives. He has also bragged about trying to bed another man's wife. Again, this is a name grounded in irrefutable fact. No assumptions or guesses needed.

This seems to work well for the Grifter In Chief. No reason why it shouldn't work well for Chuck Shumer or Nancy Pelosi.

"When they go low, we go high" had a nice ring to it but how far did it get us?

Sure it does. But the political arena is not one of them.

I don't care how "well" one uses cursing, if one uses it in the political arena then chalk that up as a loss. This extends to the marketplace of ideas. I can guarantee you that cursing will turn OFF undecided voters.

No one has ever said, "I'm voting for him because man oh man can he curse!" But millions have said, "No way am I voting for someone as vulgar as that".

Cool, guess it's okay to call people cunts and apes now.

Thank you Rosanne and Samantha for lighting the way towards greater and more unifying general discourse. Now that the bar is lowered, maybe can better understand people like Trump who like to keep it low.

Pretty much agree. I'm more of a supporter of comedy pushing boundaries, so I'm not offended personally when comedians go off the rails. I wish more people understood that tasteless and vulgar language is simply that. However, in the case of entertainment, you're dealing with investors, advertisers, etc. If you want to play stupid games, you're going to win stupid prizes. And that can go for any general public airing of language.

Samantha Bee apologized. Her show lost Auto Trader and State Farm accounts. Trump tweet gone full on Charlie Sheen.

Why aren’t they firing no talent Samantha Bee for the horrible language used on her low ratings show? A total double standard but that’s O.K., we are Winning, and will be doing so for a long time to come!

That is EXACTLY what I said would happen. Thanks for nothing, Samantha Bee. A decade of great comedy and social good thrown out the window because of a single word. She should have known better and if I have my way, they all WILL know better from now on.

One is just a word. The other is a flat-out racial slur. If you can't see that, you have a problem. While cunt is no great word to call a woman, I've heard women use it on themselves, a bit like taking back the word bitch. But if you're heaping in a trope meant to demean a whole race of people, you need to reexamine what you find offensive.

No, I don't remember that. But here's what I know, because I've seen it happen time and time and time and time again:

The GOP is unbelievably, incredibly proficient at using liberals' words against them in order to deflect away from their own foilbles. Cursing plays right into that plan.

Look at what the media is talking about today - Samantha Bee. Not Donald Trump. Not Roseanne Barr. Not the real issue. Samantha Bee. And only one person made that possible:

Samantha Bee.

Thanks to her, an untold number of undecided voters are NOT hearing about Trump/Roseanne/racism but are instead hearing about Samantha Bee. Whatever chance the Barr story had to sway some voters to the Democrats' side in the midterms is gone.

Because of Samantha Bee.

Not to mention that there are who-knows-how-many angry old white Fox News viewers who commited themselves to voting in the midterms because of the disgust they have with Samantha Bee's comments. And trust me - Samantha Bee was ALL that the Fox News hosts talked about last night. I know - I watched Fox News for a couple hours last night. I think Tucker Carlson had two sexual gratifications during his show.

This happens time and time and time again. Did Samantha Bee tip the midterms over to the GOP? Not by herself. But add up faux paus like hers and Kathy Griffin's and many more, and yes - you can make the argument that if the Democrats lose in 2018, they did it to themselves and cursing will be partially to blame.

It's one thing to lose in the arena of ideas. I can take that. But when you lose for no other reason than you give the other side the lethal weapon to kill you with, that's just unacceptable.

The Roseanne story would have timed out anyway, that is another problem, no attention span in twitterworld.

The children of fox news viewers are by and large NOT watching fox news, they are aging out. Have to disagree that ONE thing Samanta Bee said will sabotage the midterms and spells doom for the opposition. Did you watch the video I posted? That was only a small sampling.

LMAO, he DOES have quite the potty mouth, doesn't he? Which makes my point even more valid. We SHOULD be able to make the argument that his language is not the kind of language responsible leaders use but because so many liberal commentators use the same or worse language, there you go. A missed opportunity to sway undecided, civil voters.

Drew Magary is wrong. He peppered his column with the kind of language he always uses (BTW, his column on Deadspin is hilarious. I read it every week). I know how much he loathes the Trump administration but I can guarantee you that no one who reads that article is going to go from a Republican voter to a Democratic voter. And isn't that what we need?

In order to win, Democrats have to attract older white voters - many of them female. They aren't going to ever get them using the kind of language Magary uses. That's just a fact.
