"The Addicts Next Door"

Profoundly moving article in June 5 & 12, 2017 New Yorker

www.newyorker.com/magazin...dicts-next door

Peter Callahan, a psychotherapist said opoids are "tough drugs to get off of, because while they were meant to numb physical pain, they numb emotional pain as well---quickly and intensely."

Judith Feinberg, a Prof. at W. Virginia State Univ. who studies drug addiction describes opoids "as the ultimate escape drugs...boredom and a sense of uselessness and inadequacy---these are human failings that lead you to just want to withdraw."

"Damaged people can be dangerous because they know they can survive, but for some reason they don't quite know how to live." Jason Chalmers, opoid addict, 4/28/14...fatal overdose

I commented in another thread the opioid epidemic will historically go down as the worst tragedy/disaster in modern medicine.

I agree. I'm a registered nurse and I've seen these drugs used inappropriately for years. They were never intended to be used for chronic pain management. I've only ever met one doctor that was conservative enough to only prescribe them for for short term pain management as they were intended. Some of you may find this video interesting. From my experience in the medical field it is pretty accurate. Especially the part about companies lying about a patient having cancer to get fentanyl for patients that it is not indicated for.

“…Adults ushered the younger kids away. From the other side of the backstop, the older kids asked Barrett if the parents had overdosed. “I was, like, ‘I’m not gonna say.’ The kids aren’t stupid. They know people don’t just pass out for no reason.” During the chaos, someone made a call to Child Protective Services…”

Would that that were true in every case. I've recently had a few run-ins with some "kids" who would have you believe those parents were suffering from "the flu".

“…As we drove away, Barrett predicted that the man would check himself out of the hospital as soon as he could; most O.D. patients refused further treatment. Even a brush with death was rarely a turning point for an addict…”

This sounds chillingly remiscent of what happened to “this one guyclears throat I used to know.
