It's now IMPERATIVE you use Linux

Microsoft bought Github today, which is a software repository. I'm not sure what happens next, but Free Software may just be on the verge of extinction! It's now IMPERATIVE you switch to Linux, before it dies out altogether. Please, Org, do yourself a favour, I don't care how computer-illiterate you are, hit www.distrowatch.com today.

Any questions, post here, either me or (I'm sure) TD3, will help.

Cool down, you're acting as like towards the 1980's Microsoft. We're good 30 years later and not everything what they touch, dies.

If you didn't read all of the article, why would you assume anyone else will?

Although having said that, I DID read the whole article. biggrin

Everything Microsoft touches turns to shit. Another Github will evolve.

I'm no stranger to MS and their antics, over a long long time - I don't need to read about all of it, I can pretty much guess what they'll get up to.

So - whenabouts are YOU switching to Linux? smile

I'm not worried they'll kill it. I'm much more worried that the code now on it belongs to THEM!! It's worse than death!

I don't use my computer enough to care one way or another what operating system it is. Windows 10 seems to do the job just fine though so I reckon I'll stick with it.

As I say the code will be fucked up, Microsoft does that all the time. So, RIP Github, someone or a group will develop another Github.

TD has posted here about Win10 spying on you. You should change it.

I have nothing to hide. Even if they are spying on me, what possible information could they get? I don't use online banking, I have no Twitter, Instagram etc and I haven't logged in to my Facebook account in 3 years. The only thing I use my computer for is iTunes and adding music to my sd card so I can listen to it on my phone.

HOWEVER, I do use my fiancé's Xbox from time to time, and I believe that uses some form of Windows 10 integration. But again, even if they are spying on me, I have nothing to hide. Why would I care if Microsoft know I'm playing The Witcher 3 or Mass Effect?

If anything, I think that ALL computers should be monitored in some way to prevent illegal activities like child pornography and terror attacks.

I think you have Microsoft confused with the Prime Minister maybe, or even God?? lol THEY, don't wanna know if you're doing something illegal - they're just interested in marketing products to you based on your consumer behaviour smile (which you know).

Now here, with THIS statement, you've put your finger on it:

"Why would I care if Microsoft know I'm playing The Witcher 3 or Mass Effect?"

You SHOULD care. A lot of people would say that the people who sold you the console knowing WHAT games you play on it (and at what time, for how long, probably) is a GROSS breach of privacy! Your lifestyle is not their business to know!

I don't believe in God, and I didn't vote for that fool of a Taoiseach (Prime Minister) we have but I get your point
:-D

I'm sure some people might see it as a breach of their privacy but I think that kind of thing has its benefits. Obviously Microsoft are a business and they're really only doing these things so they can continue to make money but if they see that I like to play these games a lot then hopefully that means that they will make more of the kind of games I'm interested in. So in the end, everyone wins. I get to play more great games and Microsoft get to charge me for the privilege. That's win-win.

What if they see you're playing games made by their competitor, and do something to the console remotely to make it "not-work", or maybe not work optimally?

Microsoft don't see ANY game released on the Xbox as being in competition with them. They don't care what game you're playing as long as you play it on the Xbox. That's why they made the XBOX. Besides, Microsoft Games Studios make very few games as it is so not only do they not mind people playing xbox games made by other developers, they actually RELY on it.

Unless you mean that they'd be unhappy if I was playing a Nintendo or PlayStation game. In which case, there's nothing they could do about it because they don't have access to Sony or Nintendo's inner workings to prevent my PlayStation or Switch from working. Microsoft don't have that kind of power.

What I always tell people that you should learn and understand all the options computer technology has to offer. Once you have a through understanding of the pro's and con's of the technology you use can make informed choices. What's unfortunate consumers of computer technology have a lot of alternatives and options. As Dom' mentioned Linux is an excellent alternative to resist the daily erosion of computer users privacy and the abuse selling computer data. Of course if your on the Net at present, our privacy has and is being compromised.

Domainator mentioned, both of use are more than willing to take the time to teach, answer questions on why Linux should be considered as an alternative.

Emma, you're being obstinate for no reason. If you WANT to give money to someone, the Linux people take donations too, y'know? smile

It's nothing to do with being obstinate. You gave some examples of how you feel Microsoft knowing someone's gaming habits could be bad and I just explained that your fears were unfounded.

In the context of what we were talking about, they ARE unfounded. Microsoft CAN'T prevent me from playing Nintendo or PlayStation games. And they WON'T stop me from playing any xbox games not made by Microsoft Studios as you suggested.

A lot of folks are moving over to GITLAB . As I said, other alternatives will emerge.
