new lava fissure has opened up on Hawaii's Big Island in the vicinity of a geothermal energy plant.

Just hours after the fissure opened up on Saturday morning, red and black lava had piled up about 40 feet high and more than 150 feet in length, while magma chunks sprayed up to 100 feet in the air, Reuters reported....read more at link provided.

so far in my area of the California south bay people don't seem to be phased about being part of a (poosible) pending disaster.
I'm not in a panic mode yet. however i'm gathering things together just in case.
(that's if me and mine are survivors)

There probably should be some concern, but the way plate tectonics work differs from region to region. Hawaii sits on a mid-tectonic ridge where surface land is created when lava erupts from the expansion of plates and cools as it flows outward.

Meanwhile, Japan, the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and the West coast of the United States and Canada sits on the edge of major plates that border each other. They usually consist of subduction zones and transform faults.

Subduction zones are convergent plates where the edge of one plate is pushed below the edge of another plate to be recycled into the molten magma core of the earth. These are usually the deepest part of the ocean but come up against land mass as well, creating a series of volcanic mountains over time, like the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington, the Andes Mountains in South America, and Iceland and New Zealand. However, these shifts in movement can cause deep earthquakes of great magnitude, like the earthquakes in Mexico and Haiti, or the massive earthquakes that triggered tsunamis in Indonesia in 2004 and Japan in 2011.

Then you have transform faults where the edges of the tectonic plates move in opposite directions. The San Andreas fault is the most notable type of this fault.

this is VERY serious.
the tectonic plates in cslifornia in the bay area have been kind enough to shift about since the huge earthquake of centered in san francisco since 1906.
most quakes in the sf bay area have been minor in comparison.
forgive my lack of tech-geo-terms as far as the technical labels in understanding on the subject at hand.

however how will the san andreas fault area be affected if Hawaii Kilauea volcano goes off?

this is VERY real.
The Science Behind Hawaii's Surprising 2018 Volcanic Eruption
May 14, 2018 05:14pm ET
: http://www.livescience.co...-2018.html
Kilauea volcano is spewing lava and belching hazardous gases on Hawaii's Big Island, forcing more than 1,700 people to evacuate their homes.

Eruptions aren't anything new on Kilauea. In particular, the Pu'u 'ลŒ'ล vent, where lava is exposed, has erupted almost continuously since January 1983. But the latest eruption took volcanologists by surprise when it invaded Leilani Estates, a residential area near Kilauea.

Signs of trouble began in mid-March, when increased magma in the system prompted the Pu'u 'ลŒ'ล vent to inflate in size, like when a chef pumps cream into a cream puff, Janet Babb, a geologist and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory spokesperson, previously told Live Science. This surge of magma ultimately caused Pu'u 'ลŒ'ล's crater floor to collapse on April 30. After this, the excess magma traveled southeast toward the residential Puna District, Babb said. [Kilauea Volcano: Facts About the 30-Year Eruption]
Small earthquakes had shaken the region all that week, but residents were taken aback by 5.0- and 6.9-magnitude earthquakes on May 3 and 4, respectively, which preceded lava eruptions. Now, newly opened fissures are bubbling with lava almost daily, and Hawaii County Civil Defense has warned sightseers to stay away for safety's sake.

at this point seems people in the area I live in (north west of stanford u, ca.)
seem calm in regards to the volcanic eruptions on the Hawaiian island. or they are wtthin a realm of disbelief.
me?
i too am maintaining a calmness by continuing my daily routine.
and, and checking the news (once a day) and thanking the powers of creation that be for keeping those of us who are still safe while hoping for a slow down/halt to the violent evolution of the earth's natural process.
maybe if mankind stops punching the hell out of earth with the bombs of war,
mother earth would stop fighting back via the unatural amount and frequency of devastating storms across the u s in the last 15years.

Man, I feel for those people. Being on an island is different logistically. Shades of Montserrat.
